Shout Out!
Last month we told you about Alex Mcettrick who recently had a paper published at Vanderbilt University which looked into the efficacy and mechanisms behind capturing ozone gas from car exhaust with powdered metal oxides. Alex will be attending UCLA in the fall and studying chemical engineering. Well I would like to add that Alex was also recently awarded a National Merit Scholarship based on his PSAT scores through the College Board. Well done Alex and congratulations!!
MHS Music Celebrates Pride and Juneteenth
June is an exciting time in schools as we celebrate academic achievements and wrap up the school year. There's also a lot to celebrate in our communities outside of school with June being LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and the observance of Juneteenth next week. The MHS music department wanted to highlight a couple of performances from their May concert that are connected to these celebrations. We're wishing everyone throughout our Milton community a Joyful Pride Month and Happy Juneteenth!
Stonewall: 1969 by Randall Standridge by MHS Concert Band - "Stonewall 1969" is based on the events surrounding the Stonewall Riots which erupted from years of oppression faced by the LGBTQ+ community. This piece honors the past, celebrates progress, and calls for a future of unity and respect for all. Stonewall: 1969 is divided into five “scenes" each depicting an event from that night, and accompanied by a “beat poem” (Colors of a Revolution) that is intended to evoke the Greenwich Village culture of the time. The theme of each poem corresponds with colors from the original pride flag, designed by Gilbert Baker.
"Stand Up" by Cynthia Erivo from the movie Harriet by MHS Chorus - Based on the inspirational life of Harriet Tubman, “Stand Up” explores themes of hope, determination, and resistance. The song ends with Tubman’s powerful final words before her death in 1913: “I go to prepare a place for you,” signifying her desire for the next generation to fill her shoes as freedom fighters and strive for a brighter future.
MHS Unified PE Yoga
A big thank you to MHS parent Joanne Lloyd for leading our MHS Unified PE class through a wonderful yoga session. Students were taught a series of stretches and holds to improve flexibility, coordination, core strength, and deep breathing. It was a great time had by all!
Be There Certificate
MHS students were invited to complete the Be There Certificate during May which was Mental Health Awareness month. MHS students, Lucy, Reilly, and Casey introduced the Be There Certificate to their peers in a video. They explained that the Be There Certificate is a free, on-line course that teaches students how to safely support someone who might be struggling with their mental health. Then they issued a challenge: The classes that had the highest percentage of students who completed the 2-hour course will win a very special treat sponsored by the Milton Coalition and District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office.
“Sometimes friends are the first person to notice that someone may be struggling with their mental health. The goal of the Be There Certificate is to increase young people’s mental health literacy and to provide them with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to safely support someone who may be struggling,” said Margaret Carels, Director of the Milton Coalition. A group of student leaders previewed the training and thought it was engaging, informative and liked how it portrayed a wide variety of people and situations. Ultimately, this group of students worked with Mrs. Jennie Beliveau, Lead Adjustment Counselor for MPS to develop a way to roll it out to the whole school.
In total, over 300 students completed the Be There Certificate in May. Ms. Crowley, Mr. Collyer, and Mr. Cunningham had winning classes who enjoyed waffle sundaes delivered by Mrs. Beliveau and Ms. Carels.
The Be There Certificate was created by jack.org and the Born This Way Foundation. Anyone can complete the Be There Certificate, or find out more by going to www.betherecertificate.org
