The Weekly Bulli-tin
TERM 4 - Week 6
Principal's Report
Zone Blues Awards and School Sports Assembly
This week I attended both the Zone Blues Awards and our annual school Sports Assembly. Both assemblies highlighted the sheer passion and talent our students have in a range of individual and team sports. Congratulations to all award recipients on their remarkable achievements. They have shown us what it means to be dedicated athletes and have made our school proud. I encourage all award recipients to use their platform as role models for their peers by sharing their passion for sport and encouraging others to get involved. Greatness is not just about individual success; it’s also about inspiring others to pursue their dreams and be their best selves. This requires students to keep pushing themselves, to keep dreaming big, and to continue to strive for excellence in everything they do. We are excited to see where their talents will take them next.
I extend a huge thank you to the families who assist students with their sporting ambitions, as well as our teachers who have created many opportunities for students here at school. A huge thanks to Miss Gibbs in her role as Sports Coordinator, for her tireless work, passion for sport, and support and belief in students.
Safer Routes to School
I emailed all parents last week seeking feedback on Wollongong City Council's Safer Routes to school report. The report includes draft recommendations and potential options that could make the roads and footpaths around our school safer for walking, biking, and other active options. Thank you to all parents and community members who took the time to read the report and complete the survey as we aim to make journeys to and from our school safer and easier.
Disability Advocacy Futures Program (DAFP)
Details were emailed to families last week regarding the Disability Advocacy Futures Program (DAFP). This is an existing program, delivered by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice. It provides funding to advocacy services to support individuals and families with a person with disability to navigate and access NSW Government services.
Organisations contracted by the DAFP will provide support to students with disability and their families by:
providing personalised advice and guidance in the education space to students with disability and their families
working one-on-one with students with disability and their families to address specific issues
providing representation to students with disability and their families
helping navigate the NSW public education system (and other related government systems), and access services and support.
Requests for advice and support from the organisations listed under the DAFP are free. To learn more about what the department is funding, please refer to the Program Guideline (PDF 83 KB).
Inquiry into Arts and Music Education
On Monday, Bulli HS was visited by Ms Julia Finn MP, Dr Joe McGirr MP, Mr Anthony D'Adam MLC and Ms Jacqui Munro MLC as part of their inquiry into arts and music education. Thanks to Louise Manks for providing insightful feedback as Head Teacher Creative and Performing Arts. With such strong results in the HSC and amazing opportunities for our students, we really have a lot to demonstrate and celebrate at Bulli HS. I would also like to thank P&C President, David Strange, as well as our school captains, Ike and Nadia.
Extension Science
I would like to thank Woonona High School for teaching 3 of our year 12 2025 students in Extension Science, enabling them to pursue their keen interest in this subject. The collaboration and trust we have between our schools allows us to offer the very best educational outcomes to our students. We are very appreciative.
University of Wollongong
It was an honour to be asked to speak to future post-graduate students at an information session for the University of Wollongong this week. Having just completed my Master of Education in Educational Leadership, I feel grateful for the learning I have received over the past 3 years which has enabled me to reflect on and improve my leadership practice. Learning truly is enjoyable and lifelong!
School Hall Meeting
A reminder that there is a School Hall meeting this evening at 6pm for parents and the community to hear an important message from the NSW Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations and NSW Teachers Federation about the unacceptable state of public school funding and what you can do to make a difference for the future of your child’s education.
NSW public schools face a funding gap of $1.9 billion just this year alone. Analysis by the NSW Department of Education shows that over the next four years the federal government will provide $24.2 billion to the state's 970 non-government schools, but only $14.3 billion to the 2216 public schools.
This underfunding of public schools has serious consequences for our school community. Some of the unmet needs of our students and the aspirations we have for our school community will be discussed at the meeting. Full funding of public schools is the best investment we could make for our future.
P & C Meeting
Our final P&C meeting for the term is on Wednesday 27 November at 6pm in the Staff Common Room. I hope to see many of you there.

ASPIRE (Artistic, Social-Emotional, Physical and Intellectual Rewards for Excellence)
Our ASPIRE merit program is designed to foster student engagement, motivation, and academic excellence within our school community. ASPIRE encourages students to set personal goals and strive for excellence in their academic and extracurricular pursuits. With our staff recognising and rewarding positive behaviours, diligence, and achievements, we not only celebrate individual successes but also cultivate a culture of encouragement and support among peers. This program empowers students to take ownership of their educational journey, reinforcing the idea that hard work and dedication can lead to meaningful rewards.
Understanding the concepts of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation is essential in the context of the ASPIRE merit program. Extrinsic motivation refers to the drive to engage in an activity to earn external rewards or recognition, such as the points and rewards associated with ASPIRE. While this type of motivation plays a crucial role in encouraging participation and effort, we also aim to foster intrinsic motivation, where students find personal satisfaction and joy in their achievements and learning. By highlighting both forms of motivation, we encourage students to not only strive for the tangible rewards offered through ASPIRE but also to develop a love for learning and personal growth. This balanced approach helps students see that while external recognition is valuable, the true reward lies in the knowledge and skills they acquire along the way.
As parents, your involvement in the ASPIRE program can make a significant difference in your child's experience. Engaging with your child about their progress and encouraging their participation in the program can help them appreciate the value of hard work and perseverance. By fostering discussions around their goals and achievements, you reinforce the importance of striving for excellence, while also building their confidence and resilience. Together, we can create a supportive environment that motivates our students to reach their full potential and aspire to greatness in all aspects of their lives.
With a significant number of our students engaging positively with the ASPIRE program in 2024, we are excited to provide a 2024 Reward Day to Jamberoo Recreation Park for students in Years 7-10. A team consisting of Year Advisers, HT Wellbeing and your child’s relevant Deputy Principal considered every student’s individual progress with this program, along with their pattern of attendance and behaviour in 2024, to make an on-balance judgement, prior to issuing invitations via School Bytes.
2025 Revised ASPIRE Merit Program
To ensure that the ASPIRE merit program remains effective and relevant, we have implemented a structured process of monitoring and reflection. Throughout the year, we have regularly reviewed student participation data, feedback, and overall engagement levels. This process has allowed us to assess whether the points required for success accurately reflect our students' efforts and achievements. In doing so we found that the current benchmarks are too challenging and have made some minor adjustments to better align with our students’ experiences and capabilities. We believe that through thoughtful evaluation and adjustments, we can help all students thrive in the ASPIRE program.
As part of our commitment to celebrating student achievements within the ASPIRE merit program, we are thrilled to announce the top 20 students from each Year Group who exemplify outstanding engagement and commitment. These students should be honoured for their exceptional efforts, dedication, and contributions to our school community. Congratulations to the following:
Preparation for 2025
As we enter the second half of this term, there are many things happening around our school. The teachers are finalising student reports, we are working on staffing for the next school year and teachers are meticulously reviewing and formulating class lists for 2025.
It is important to note that the teachers spend a great deal of time working on the composition of classes each year. Our Year Advisers and Learning Support Staff work closely with classroom teachers and executive staff to consider the academic progress, the social and emotional needs of students, relationships between students and general and individual needs of the cohort of children.
These are just a few of the factors that must be considered.
I thank you for trusting the professional judgement of the teachers as they work to ensure that we have balanced and considered classes in each grade.
All students, regardless of the class in which they are placed, are subject to the same high expectations of teachers where learning is geared to different learning styles, interests, and levels of achievement.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in the education of your child.

Year Advisers Reports
Year 8
Year 8’s Journey 2024
Year 8 Report written by the SRC team - Angus, Bede, Charlotte, Jess, Tilly, Celeste
This year has been filled with exciting activities and achievements. The SRC has compiled a memoir of the many wonderful things our students have accomplished and experienced.
Momentum
Approximately 20 students each week participated in an all-boys program focusing on teamwork, building and skills to benefit their futures. Hosted by the PCYC, they would participate in initiatives specifically tailored to young boys. We interviewed two participants, Mathew Stamer and Chris Fraser, who said that it positively impacted them by letting them connect with boys their age through things like sport. The highlight of the day was a group game of basketball which let them share experiences with each other. They learned skills such as loyalty to friends as well as showing respect to people in the community. They would love to do it again, and said that it was a highlight of the year!
Science
Around 10 students got the opportunity to go to an engineering day in Sydney that was only for girls or non-binary students. Maria Castro attended the day and here's what she had to say about it. “The day was entertaining and exciting and was a really good learning experience. We got to learn about separation techniques used in mines, how to code, and how electricity is produced from wind turbines.” We have also heard from multiple participants that the food was amazing and that it is a really good reason to go. Going with a friend was really fun according to Maria and she said that they enjoyed their time as the activities were fun and the food was amazing.
Mountain Biking
There was an interschools opportunity for any mountain bikers who were interested in competing at Thredbo. Around 20 students attended and one of them was Daniel Tapp. In his interview he stated that he enjoys mountain biking because it's enjoyable and athletic and can be done in almost any condition. He likes the friendly competition included in the interschool opportunities and it is a great place to make friends.
Multiverse
Multiverse is a STEM & Arts competition staged for NSW DoE public and secondary schools. It was developed at Bulli High School from 2022. The program accepts artwork, poems, photographs, combat robots, sports inventions, original music and cake designs, among many other categories. Practically any entry that showcases a student’s talent and drive. Students from Year 5-11 are invited to submit a major work. The major work will be relevant to either ‘THE FUTURE’ or ‘ILLAWARRA STORIES’. The judges’ criteria for success will be originality, conceptual depth and high-quality presentation.
Liana and Ella showcase their unique jewellery designs and business
“Coastal Charms” in their very own outlet at Thirroul & Co.
Combat Robotics
One of the things that are in the Multiverse is combat robots for the year sevens. This is a valuable event where the students build 3D-printed robots that will try and push each other off a ping pong table. This event teaches the students resilience to keep trying to make the robot work and move.
Silicon Valley
The opportunity to join the Silicon Valley Startup Club was also offered to students, sparking excitement and curiosity among the participants. The first thing we did was visit the Environmental Tech Hub in Sydney, an innovative space buzzing with energy and creativity. There, we had the privilege of meeting Ben Rennie, a seasoned entrepreneur and mentor. Ben guided us through the intricate process of developing our prototype for a new bike rack. His insights and expertise were invaluable, helping us to refine our ideas and turn our concepts into a tangible product. The experience at the tech hub not only enhanced our technical skills but also inspired us to think critically and collaboratively, embodying the entrepreneurial spirit that the Silicon Valley Startup Club aims to foster.
Sport Carnivals
During the year, our school participated in numerous Carnivals and Gala days for a wide range of sports. We decided to speak to some of the students who participated. The students we spoke to participated in Zone, Regional and State carnivals for Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country as well as Basketball, Oztag, Rugby 7s, Cricket, and Beach Touch Gala days. They enjoyed learning new skills and working as teams in these events. Multiple teams progressed through all the levels and a number of them even made it to the finals, winning the championships. One of the students we spoke to was Ivy Foster. Ivy participated in many sporting activities this year including zone, regional and state athletics carnivals and was the recipient of the Sports Award in our recent assembly. Well done Ivy!
Super Smash Bros
Mr. Van recently organized a Super Smash Bros. competition, bringing a wave of excitement and camaraderie among the students. Those winners in Year 7 and Year 8 were to play off against the Year 12 Students. Heath, who participated because he thought it would be a fun idea, ended up winning and experienced a positive boost from his victory. He’s enthusiastic about the prospect of competing again and confidently believes in his chances of winning once more. On the other hand, Kyle joined the competition to have fun while at school and found it immensely helpful for his mental stability. Although he is eager to participate again, he remains humble about his chances of clinching another victory. The competition was a smash hit, encouraging both skill and sportsmanship among the players.
Game Face - Game on
Winners are grinners
School Cricket The school cricket team provided an excellent opportunity for students to spend time with friends and compete against other schools. Last year, the Bulli High School under-15s cricket team won the competition. Liam, a team member, highlighted the importance of teamwork and confirmed he would definitely participate again.
Umpiring AFL Students
Year 8 were involved in umpiring AFL matches, our friends enjoyed getting involved with younger primary school students, encouraging a fun day of competition. Spending time with the younger kids was a highlight, and participants learned to pay close attention to the game. They saw this as a valuable opportunity and expressed a willingness to do it again.
Swimming Carnival
We interviewed Ruby to reflect on the highlights of our annual swimming carnival this year. This whole school event allows students to compete against each other to move forward to zone, district and state competitions. Ruby participated in this activity and said that she enjoyed meeting new people and competing in her sport, highlighting the social and competitive aspects of the event. The reason why she competed was because of her love of the sport and her passion, which motivated her to attend.
Interschools Snow Competition
Someone who participated in competitive snowsports during the Snow Interschools event was Lyla Bell. She found the experience very enjoyable and is keen to continue, appreciating the opportunities it provides to young students. Lyla enjoyed exploring her passion and competing against other students and recommends it for anyone considering doing it in the following years.
Activity Day 2024
Our Year Advisors gave us a wonderful opportunity to have a fun day at the Cataract Activity Center! This day consisted of multiple activities including a challenge valley, water slides, initiatives, volleyball and teamwork activities. Later at night we made dinner which were lovely burritos! This was followed by a bush disco and campfires, creating the perfect end to a great day!
We would like to thank our Year Advisors, Teachers, Parents, PNC, venue hosts as well as our friends for making all these opportunities possible. We hope there will be many more opportunities in the future to further benefit our school experience.
SRC Team 2024
A message from our Year Advisors:
We are nearly at the end of our Year 8 journey. We feel very lucky to have shared this stage of your journey with you. There have been varying experiences for each and everyone of you. New friendships have been developed, personal bests in exam and sporting results, comfort zones stretched and opportunities gained. Many laughs, tears and everything in between. Alongside this, a massive improvement has occurred in attendance for all of us, helping us connect more with our friends and teachers which leads to a harmonious and positive environment, for our Year 8 family to thrive. Not to mention how many of you have spent the year growing taller than us!
2024 is certainly a year for you to reflect upon and be proud of yourselves for displaying kindness to your friends in times of need, and grit when you needed to expand your horizons and grow. We are so lucky to be your ‘school mums’ helping you become the best you can be and feel honoured to be the lucky humans to help guide you through one of the most challenging periods of your lives so far..
Wishing you and your families a healthy and happy Summer, and we really look forward to our next chapter of our journey…Bring on 2025…….Year 9!!!

Year 9
ManCave
An article from a student:
Bulli High School’s introduction of the ManCave association was a great method of getting down-to-earth with teenage adolescents. With well mannered hosts, the ManCave aimed at bringing focus towards mental wellbeing of youth towards teens and efficiently succeeded at doing so. Their staff, with their fun, lively, and serious when they needed to be, manner effectively related to the youth and helped their needs in terms of mental health, in a fun and relatable manner, sharing stories, past experiences and expert pieces of advice. Overall, I highly recommend the ManCave organisation to any schools looking to teach adolescents and provide valuable lifelong learning advice revolving around current mental health situations and priceless valuable advice in an easy-going manner.

Year 9 Wellbeing Day
An article from a student:
At the year 9 wellbeing day there were many activities that reviewed things like wellbeing, body image and friendships. For example the scavenger hunt was great because it required you to communicate with people even if you don't normally really talk to them. Following after the scavenger we had a talk about body image and did drawings which was great because it helped girls to recognize that everyone is different and that's okay. I enjoyed the day because I had a good time with my friends and I got to build friendships with people that I don't normally talk to. The last activity we did with our group was the sprinkles of kindness activity which was where you had to write out something that is kind and then you got to decorate your own cupcake. Overall, it was a great experience with helping girls come together to recognize our differences but also our similarities towards each other.

Year 10
It is hard to believe that we are five weeks out from the end of the 2024 year. With so much happening and so much to look forward to, I will begin by congratulating all Year 10 students on completing their assessments tasks and examinations this year. Although the assessment period is over, it is important to remember that your teachers will still have curriculum dot points that are required to be finished.
Congratulations to those students that were recipients of the Bulli High Five Awards.
It is so pleasing to see so many of you being recognised for your efforts.
By now, most of you will have received your subject selections for next year. The process is one that requires a lot of considerations including student numbers, teacher allocations, timetable restrictions and resource availability. It is not always possible for every student to get exactly what they have asked for but, in most cases, student choices were met. I hope you are looking forward to beginning your chosen courses next year.
It was great to see that many of you enjoyed the Transition Day that was organised by Ms Crawford. The number of students participating in the Magic Show was phenomenal. I managed to take a photo of some of you assisting with the performance.
Moving forward, please continue to monitor the Class of 2026 Classroom for information. There is a Google Form for all students to complete regarding the choice of senior jacket. If you haven’t looked, please do so and have a say in what you will be offered. The next step will be deciding the colours and design.
Both Mr Sheehy and I are looking forward to working with you as you begin your senior years in 2025. It will be a time of change for each of you as the journey of your high school years continues. We are here to support you, provide opportunities and assist in whatever way we can.
Wishing every Year 10 student a wonderful end to Term 4 and a safe and Merry Holiday period. Enjoy your break!!!

Year 12
Mentorship Program and Assembly Updates
As our Year 12 students embark on this pivotal stage of their high school journey, the school has implemented several supportive measures to guide them through the academic challenges of their HSC year. This term, students have selected teacher mentors, a crucial part of their support network designed to promote well-being, effective study practices, and balance.
Teacher Mentors: Your Guide Through Year 12
Every Year 12 student has now chosen a teacher mentor, providing them with an invaluable ally to help navigate the ups and downs of HSC study. Teacher mentors offer personalized assistance with study strategies, time management, and balancing schoolwork with personal life. These mentors advocate for students’ rights, offering support in difficult times and acting as a sounding board for any challenges students may face. Mentors are also available for regular check-ins to discuss concerns and provide support, encouraging students to reach their full potential.
Ms. Gardiner on the Benefits of Retaining Six Subjects
In a separate assembly item, Ms. Gardiner highlighted the advantages of keeping six subjects through the year. Retaining a full subject load can give students more flexibility and options, allowing them to identify strengths and decide later on any potential adjustments. For those considering dropping a subject, Ms. Gardiner walked through the process, advising students to carefully consider their goals and consult with mentors and teachers before making final decisions. She emphasized that any changes should be made thoughtfully, with attention to how adjustments may impact HSC pathways.
Ms. Gillroy’s Assembly on the HSC Assessment Schedule and Misadventure Process
Ms. Gillroy recently held an informative assembly presentation focused on the HSC assessment schedule, a critical aspect of the students’ final year. She outlined the timing and structure of assessments and the importance of meeting deadlines and planning effectively. Ms. Gillroy also explained the misadventure process, designed to assist students who encounter unexpected difficulties, such as illness or family emergencies, during assessment periods. This process ensures that students can address unforeseen challenges, maintaining a fair assessment environment.
Together, these initiatives aim to build a solid support structure around our Year 12 students, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed for a balanced and successful final year. We encourage students and parents to reach out with any questions about the mentorship program, assessment schedule, or subject selection process.

Surf Academy Media Session
An enormous thank you to WIN TV’s Steve Hart for media training our surf academy. Students learnt about interview techniques and the psychology behind media relations. Steve held his own for 1.5 hours and pitched a master class which will serve our students well in future years. Thank you, Steve!
Bulli High Surf Academy Magazine
Bulli High is proud to launch our surf magazine Barrells, a 96 page glossy, at Multiverse Day on 2 December.
As a limited edition print run of only 100 copies, the magazine will be on sale at our Surfers’ Alumni Reunion on 12 December for $35 each. There are approximately 40 copies yet to be pre-ordered. An additional print run can be organised depending on demand.
The magazine was a tireless labour of love for BHS parents Megan Rowe (ARE Media) and Justin Worsley, with additional work by Finlay Smart (daughter of senior teacher, Mrs Brooke Smart) as sub-editor. Four current students contributed articles along with Steve Davis and legendary ex-coach Ms Wendy Kon. Standby for a great article about Sandon Point Boardriders and an interview with Christian De Clouett from Scarborough Boardriders.
Photographic contributions were made by a range of students and our very own principal Mrs Denise James, who is an excellent photographer in her own right.
We thank our sponsors among the parents who made this venture possible including Ms Petra Delaney at Steel City Surf Classic, See Side Optical, Black Diamond Speech Pathology, Bec Ninness at Astute Finance, Thirroul Pharmacy, Ms Renee Moston at Exclusive Stainless Products, and our esteemed ex-student, Mr Kane Organ.
We are honoured to have the world-class photography of our ex-student Ray Collins in our magazine, a man who refused to accept payment for his work. Ray is a total gentleman.
The magazine becomes a NSW statewide project next year to talent-identify future journalists, graphic designers and photographers in public schools.
We are proud to announce the end of our year-long project to identify both historic surfing BHS champions on a commemorative gold-leafed board and highlight the 126 surfers who have represented our school since 1978.
We welcome you all back with open arms for our reunion at Bulli High on Thursday, 12 December (3.15pm to 5.00pm) where we will unveil the commemorative surfboard made by Jason Gava and family.
All preorders for the magazine can be reserved by contacting David at: multiversebhs@gmail.com
Bulli High Surfers Reunion
All past and present Bulli High surfers are reminded that we welcome you back to school on Thursday, 12 December between 3.30pm and 5.00pm to celebrate your contribution to the School.
We are staging a brief reunion for our alumni surfers and the unveiling of the much-awaited commemorative gold-leafed surfboard.
There will be a couple of short speeches at 4pm and the sale of our very own surf magazine, Barrells — a professional publication made with ARE Media on sale for $35. You might find your name in there!

Artist in Residence Program
A big thank you to Netflix director and rising Australian star Luke Shanahan for mentoring Year 9 students Luke Towner, Jack Rumery and Kaelan Connor yesterday. With Multiverse only two weeks away, our Artist in Residence filmmakers received some expert advice about how to tweak their short films.
At the conclusion of this year’s Multiverse on 2 December, a new round of Artist in Residence students will be selected for 2025. Around 6-7 in all.
There is no formal application process.
The School will assess a student’s ability to do the program based on the quality of their Multiverse entries this year. Essentially the students will receive professional support to complete a major work they will present in time for 2025 Multiverse Day. There may be a term-based charge incurred depending on the quality of mentors we can provide. We rely on donations and sponsorships to continue this program.
Please remember to bring along some coins or else a debit card for the ice cream and donut vans at Multiverse Day. These will be positioned behind the Hall.
Please remember to tell us ahead of time if you plan to submit an entry this year at multiversebhs@gmail.com
