The Buzz
SUMMER TERM - 9TH MAY 2024
Message from the Head of School
We have really enjoyed our learning this week and have made the most of some outside learning opportunities in the sun. We have focussed on the principle of Independence and how we can show this in our learning and play.
As a school we use the zones of regulation to talk about our emotions and this starts in Nursery. I asked the children what they could do if they began a lesson in the blue or yellow zone. They gave me some great examples of what they could do to independently get back to the green zone and ready to learn.
As a leadership team we are well underway with preparing for the transition to the next year group. Please be aware we do mix Reception to form four well balanced classes in Year One. This is highly successful and helps all children reach their full potential. As a parent this can feel overwhelming but the children always impress us with their adaptability and excitement for something new, knowing they will see all of their friends at playtime and lunchtime every day.
All children spend time with their new teacher on the morning of 1st July which is our HPP moving up day.
Year Two parents, please keep an eye out for a separate transition letter which gives all the dates for transition opportunities with HJS. These are also listed in the ‘Summer Term Calendar of Events’ section of The Buzz. It is important all parents keep an eye on this section as it lists class assemblies, sports afternoons, our art exhibition and much more.
I hope everyone enjoys the sunny weekend ahead.

🟨 Nursery
We have had another wonderful week in Nursery exploring a new traditional tale. This week we have enjoyed listening to the story 'The three little pigs' and have loved joining in with fun phrases like 'no, no by the hair on my chinny chin chin...' and 'I'll huff and I'll puff...' We have been busy creating our own pig characters using playdough, painting the big bad wolf and making paper plate characters too.
We have been very excited to see the caterpillars have cocooned and are now busy transforming into butterflies. We can't wait to see them emerge soon.
Using familiar stories to help us we have been exploring positional language and have challenged each other to give instructions in the garden. Can we travel along/over/under?
In PE we are continuing our gymnastics and exploring different ways to travel around the mats and across the mats. Such a busy and exciting week again.
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
We have been reading the story 'The Three Little pigs' this week and talking about the materials the pigs chose to build their homes from. At home please talk about which material was the best to choose when building a house. If they could build a house using anything what would they choose?
🟥 Reception
In Reception, we have been continuing our focus on traditional tales. This week, we have been looking at the story, 'The Three Little Pigs.' The children have been learning to sequence the story and retell it to their friends. We have also been talking about how the characters might have been feeling at different parts in the story and decided to write a letter from Mr Wolf to the Three Little Pigs. We talked about the features of writing a letter and what we need to include. The children enjoyed getting creative in provision, making masks of the characters, building the houses from the story and acting out the story!
In Maths this week, we have been exploring a tens frame and noticing that when the tens frame is full, there must be 10 objects, we don't need to count. We have been looking at different ways to make 10 and solving problems within 10.

🟦 Year 1
As the weather begins to warm up, we have been having lots of fun in PE this week learning to throw a variety of sports equipment with accuracy. After exploring the technique to throw under arm and over arm we applied our knowledge in throwing games.
In phonics, we continue to recap all of our sounds in preparation for our upcoming phonics ‘quiz’. We have also been practising segmenting and blending real words and alien words, looking carefully at the letters and saying all of the sounds we can see.
We have been learning about William the Conqueror, the first Norman Monarch of England, in history this week. We learnt about William’s role in the Battle of Hastings using the Bayeux Tapestry before working in pairs to create freeze frames from the Bayeux Tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings.
In science, we have been learning about animal groups in our topic ‘Amazing Animals!’. We have been discussing the features of different animals and what different animals eat. We thought about ways we could group animals together on the carpet before heading off to group animals as a table. We noticed that sometimes animals could be in both groups or in neither.
We have been focusing on the creatures featured in our new focus text, ‘The Ugly Five’ by Julia Donaldson, this week. We have been creating our own expanded noun phrases by pairing adjectives and nouns to describe the creatures, ready to use in our own recount of the story.
In maths, we have been counting forwards and back in 2s, 5s and 10s, identifying the patterns made when counting on a number square and using these to find the missing numbers on number tracks. We are now beginning to use this knowledge to multiply and divide objects and quantities into groups.
🟩 Year 2
We hope you all had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend. We are so pleased the sun has come out this week to brighten our days. Please remember to label all jumpers, in the warmer weather the children take jumpers off at break time and can often go missing without the name and class being clearly labelled.
We have been finishing our Fractions unit in Maths this week, continuing to think about non unit fractions and recognising three quarters as well as finding three quarters of an amount. Next week we will begin to learn about time; we will be learning to read time using an analogue clock. Please support your child at home by discussing minutes and hours and recognising a given time on a clock.
In computing this week we have continued to use Chrome Music Lab to create digital music. The children have been wonderfully creative, using their knowledge of notes, pitch and rhythm to create their own pieces of music.
In History we have spent some time learning about Mary Seacole and her impact as a nurse during the Crimean War. This week we have also learnt about Florence Nightingale and how she helped nurse soldiers during this time. We loved learning about Florence’s early life and used secondary sources to help us understand why she wanted to leave the comfort of her home in England to nurse in a war zone. We were very impressed to find out how she changed hospitals and improved them to allow soldiers to recover. We decided she was a kind, courageous and resilient nurse.
Please remember our upcoming DT explorer day on Wednesday 22nd May. Children are invited to dress as explorers for the day as we design and create our own jungle jeep. Please keep sending in resources ready for us to build our jeeps.
