No Place for Hate
Although our commitment to promoting respect is year-round, this week we have been focusing on the importance of kindness, building-wide. We have hung the “No Place for Hate Promise” from the Anti-Defamation League in our main hall. The promise will be discussed in classrooms and students, staff and families are invited to sign it to show their support. As teachers discuss the resolution in class, related topics such as fairness, rights, and diversity often come up.
Diversity is a notion that is understood in different ways as children grow. From noticing different hair and skin colors to learning that a classmate shares their favorite food to attending a sleepover at a friend's home that has a different culture or family structure-all are experiences that shape a child's view of diversity!
Here at Hillside, all students participate in activities in classroom counseling and through SEL curriculum about respect and avoiding bullying behaviors. Social studies lessons present a view of people of various cultures and countries. Understanding that our community is full of people who are the "same and different" helps us honor and show respect for all people.
You are all welcome to sign the “Resolution of Respect” that you will find hanging in our front hall.
Thank you,
Kathie McGill, LMHP
Hillside School Counselor
Dismissal Procedure Reminders
Just a few reminders about dismissal:
- If you have dismissal plan changes, please contact the office (402)390-6450
- If you are using the carpool lane, please look for your student on his/her pawprint at the front entrance (please pull up as far as you are able)
- Students who walk home, should begin walking right after dismissal; the playground during the dismissal period (fifteen minutes after the end of the day) will remain as clear as possible so that staff can determine which students are waiting for a ride
- A student who rides the bus should go directly to his/her assigned location and remain with assigned staff
- Students who are on the playground are required to have a parent present and actively supervising their child. Staff may inquire regarding supervision, and students without a parent present will be asked to return to the carpool area.
Thank you for keeping our dismissal running smoothly and keeping our procedures safe for our students.
Energy Bus
Hillside Elementary has jumped on the Energy Bus. We have created an Energy Bus Committee, which is in charge of promoting a positive workplace environment for all
staff members. The committee follows the book The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your
Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy by Jon Gordon.
Each month we recognize two staff members that make Hillside “the place to be”.
September’s Bus Winners were two of our wonderful Educational Assistants: Mr.
Roberts and Miss Castan.
Mr. Roberts is in his second year here at Hillside and is studying Psychology at UNO.
When he is not here or at school, he enjoys hiking. He recently spent some time hiking
in Colorado. Mr. Roberts was recognized for his positive attitude he displays wherever
he goes.
Miss Castan has been with Hillside for 15 years. She has a 21-year-old son who is
pursuing a career in car photography. She loves the outdoors, especially the summer
where she enjoys swimming and walking. She enjoys reading about fashion and design,
going to movies and traveling. Miss Castan was recognized for the relationships she
builds with students here. She says, “I have been inspired by them. I have been in awe
of their resiliency in life. I have been motivated by them to work my hardest on their
behalf.”
