This Week at Adams Elementary
Congratulations to the fourth and fifth grade students at Adams Elementary for reaching the accelerated reading benchmark. Your hard work and dedication to reading has paid off and we are so proud of your achievement. Keep up the great work and continue to explore the exciting world of books!
Pyramid of Success
Coach Wooden believed and taught that the most important responsibility each of us had to ourselves was to do everything we could to achieve our own potential. He offered his Pyramid of Success and his definition of Success as a guide, stepping stones to help young people understand what it really takes to make the effort – 100% – to fulfill their potential and do their best. Every couple of weeks, our students will focus on one or two character traits from Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Positive examples of students exemplifying the character traits will be recognized with the Pyramid of Success Awards. Classroom lessons will reinforce elements of the Pyramid of Success. Additionally, whole school assemblies will feature character traits from Coach Wooden’s Pyramid of Success.
For the next three weeks, we will be focusing on Cooperation:
- Cooperation. “Working together with others required teamwork. If you wish to be heard, listen. Cooperation means working together in all ways to accomplish the common goal. It also allows individuals to move forward together instead of going off in different directions. Two horses pulling a wagon must move in the same direction or their wagon does not move.”
This month, the following Adams elementary students have gone above and beyond and demonstrating 2 key traits from John Wooten’s Pyramid of Success: friendship and loyalty. These qualities are essential for both in and out of the classroom. Friendship reflects the students ability to be a good friend to others. Loyalty showcases the students ability to stay truthful in all situations. We are incredibly proud of how our students who have embodied these character traits in October, contributing to a positive and productive learning environment. Congratulations to all of your hard work, focus, and growth this month! Keep up the great work as we continue to climb the Pyramid of Success together. Go All-Stars!

Book Reviews
STUDENT/AGE: Genesis
TEACHER/GRADE: Martinez/3rd
FAVORITE BOOK: Frizzy by Claribel Ortega
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THIS BOOK TO OTHER KIDS?
It’s a story about being yourself, loving yourself and not letting bullies win. It was super interesting. I felt like Marlene (the main character) was my age and was talking to me like a friend and like I was part of the story.
WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER/WHY?
Marlene was my favorite character. She was bullied for having hair that was different to the other kids, but she was happy being different and stood up to the bullies. She loved her curls and was happy that they were a part of her. She showed me that you are perfect the way you are.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART?
When Marlene’s tia did her hair for her and surprised her with a set of hair supplies!
Last week, we achieved 100% attendance in three classes! Congratulations to Mrs. Poulsen, Mrs. Bonthius, and Mrs. Herrera’s classes—AMAZING work!
Did you know that absences and tardiness can impact the entire classroom? When a teacher has to slow down to help students catch up, it can affect the overall learning experience for everyone.
Here are some tips to help your student with good attendance:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
- Try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- If your child must stay home due to extended, ask the teacher or office for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.

Volunteer Information
We are happy to welcome volunteers to our campus. Volunteering is a perfect opportunity to become more familiar with our school and support your child’s teacher.
Adams volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application through the NMUSD website and check in at the office each time through our Raptor System. Please see the link: NMUSD Volunteers. Once your application is approved, you will receive a notification. All cleared volunteers will then complete an orientation at Adams.
Please note that field trip volunteers need to go through the volunteer/visitor system before attending a field trip.
Attendance
Attendance is very important to a child’s success in school. Students are expected to be here each day on time and ready to learn. However, we understand that there are occasions where an absence may occur. Please be sure to contact the absence hotline to report all absences at 714-424-4702.
Did you know? Research shows that chronically absent students (students with 10% absences over the school year = 18 absences) are less likely to read on grade level by 3rd grade, are more likely to score lower on standardized tests, get suspended in middle school, and are at least four times more likely to not complete high school.
Attendance Matters!!!
Safety Protocols
All teachers and Adams staff have been trained on the Standard Response Protocol. This protocol allows everyone on site to use clear and common language during emergency responses. Whenever emergency drills are held at Adams Elementary (dates are all posted on the Adams Elementary website), we will inform our parent community through our weekly newsletter.
