Ducks Update
Back to School Edition

March 20, 2025
A Note from Ms. de Boom-Howard
Hello Davis Duck Families,
The overwhelming support from our community for our school has been truly remarkable this past week, highlighted by the incredible success and fun of our Boots and Bling Gala. It was a true team effort, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, purchased or donated items, and contributed to the event's success. A special thank you to the entire Foundation Board for organizing the Gala!
Kindness Week has also been amazing! Our PALs did a fantastic job with "Piecing Together a Kinder World." Wednesday’s community dance party was filled with smiles, laughter, and lots of dancing. Thank you, PALs, for bringing so much joy to our campus!
Today, we had the honor of welcoming Brent Poppen for inspiring assemblies and student meet-and-greets. His powerful message focused on antibullying, believing in your dreams, and overcoming adversity. I encourage you to join us after Flag Deck tomorrow for a special parent assembly — I think you'll find his message truly impactful.
I also wanted to share a great tip from last week’s Raising a Responsible Digital Citizen parent training put on by our Educational Technology team. If you missed it or would like to revisit the content, you can access the presentation here. I hope you find some helpful tips to support your children at home. One resource I consistently use with my own kids is Common Sense Media. Whenever they ask to watch a movie, download a game, or try a new app, they know I’ll check Common Sense Media first.
It’s a fantastic tool for reviewing appropriate age recommendations, positive messages, role models, and even parent and child reviews. While some resources now require a membership fee, many helpful guides and tips are still available for free.
Thank you for helping us spread kindness and stay informed at Davis!
Go Ducks!

Core Value of the Week
Take responsibility for everything you say
This week, we’re focusing on the CORE value of taking responsibility for everything you say. Our words have power — they can build others up, encourage, and inspire. But they can also hurt, discourage, or cause misunderstandings.
At Davis, we challenge our Ducks to think before they speak, choose kindness, and own their words. If a mistake is made, it’s important to apologize and make things right. Taking responsibility shows integrity and helps strengthen our school community.
Let’s make our words count this week!
Important Information
Free TB Testing for Parent Volunteers
Health Services is happy to announce that as of March 24th, our parents can visit the clinic at the Besst Center on a walk-in basis and get their TB testing completed at no cost to them (excluding chest x-rays). The times that are able to visit the clinic for this purpose are listed below.
Tuesday afternoons from 3 pm - 6 pm
Friday mornings from 8 am - 11:30 am
Health Services is happy to support your efforts to build your parent volunteer teams as we know how important they are to our programs and mission. These dates will be available thru this school year.
Newport Mesa Soccer Classic (formally Pilot Cup)
We’re excited to announce that information for the Newport Mesa Soccer Classic will be available soon! This fun and competitive tournament is open to students in 3rd-6th grade and will take place from May 27th to June 1st at the Farm Fields. Stay tuned for more details!
Expanded Learning Survey
The Expanded Learning Department is seeking feedback from parents regarding the programs offered across the sites that have programs before or after school. This is NOT limited to enrichment classes but to all programming, including Project Kids Connect, Boys and Girls Club, AlphaBest, Active Learning, Think Together, YMCA, and ROCKS. The survey will be available to families from March 10 through March 21, 2025.
Dress Code Reminders
We wanted to take a moment to remind you of the dress code. For more detailed information, please refer to our Dress Code policy in the handbook by clicking here.
Shoes must be practical so that students can run, jump, and kick while involved in physical activities on the playground. This means that tennis shoes or other closed-toe and closed-heel shoes are appropriate.
We continue to have students who have issues with “Croc” type shoes. Please send them in tennis shoes to school.
Please ensure that t-shirts cover the student's entire midriff. Handbook states:
No spaghetti straps, crop top shirts, halter tops, or bare midriffs. Shoulder straps must be at least one (1) inch wide.
No undergarments should be visible.
Batteries Needed- TWO weeks left!
It’s time for Costa Mesa Sanitary District’s Battery Recycling Contest! Each year, schools collect batteries for recycling and earn money for their school at the same time! Please help us by sending in the batteries you used to add to the box.
The last day for battery pickup is April 3rd. Get those batteries in!
We are still in 3rd place. Help us move to #1!
Foundation Information
Our Boots & Bling Gala was a rootin’-tootin’ good time, and we couldn't have done it without y’all! A huge thank you to all the Davis family and friends who showed up, kicked up their heels, and supported our Davis Ducks. We’ll be wrangling up the final numbers soon and can’t wait to share how much we raised for our community!
Now that the dust has settled and the boots and bling are tucked away, we’d love to hear from you whether you attended the shindig or not! Help us make next year’s event even bigger and better by sharing your thoughts in our Gala Feedback Survey. Just click the link below to send us your feedback.
Thanks again, partners—we sure do appreciate ya! 🤠💛
