CVU Celebrations
December 15, 2023 LAST CELEBRATIONS OF 2023!
Dear CVU Community: If you spend more than five minutes with me, I am likely to reference some wisdom I gleaned from Val Gardner (former CVU principal) or Ann Bunting (my mom…and family systems therapist). Our staff is far too polite to produce an eye roll directly in front of me, but a few have issued gentle reminders that they may have heard that story/metaphor/adage/lesson/quip/etc before. I mention Val and my mom now as they shared a similar vision about parenting and caregiving–namely that parents and caregivers are not just parents and caregivers but leaders of their own family systems. When we see ourselves as leaders, we are more likely to do the things that leaders do. We are more likely to find calm within ourselves, to listen actively, to be purpose-oriented, to seek a clarifying vision, to find support when we need it, and so much more. Thus when I saw the offer below from Katy and Laurie, I could feel my mother applauding somewhere in the universe. She would see the support group as a group of leadership consultants helping one another to lead the most important people in their worlds.

Weekly support group for CVU parents & caregivers intersecting with the mental health system.
Starting in January 2024, CVU clinicians Katy Farnham & Laurie Berryman are offering a weekly meeting for CVU parents and caregivers who are intersecting with the mental health system, (and all of its challenges!). If you find yourself feeling confused, stressed, or isolated as you try to help your adolescent navigate the mental health system, this meeting is for you! Come meet other caregivers trying to navigate similar challenges, and learn more about mental health resources & systems. Discussion will be facilitated by Howard School Services clinician Katy Farnham LCMHC and CVU Social Worker Laurie Berryman Ed.D. Format: standing 60-minute meeting, offered weekly, that can be accessed remotely. Meeting times offered will be mid-day (12:00-1:00 pm?). When several caregivers express interest in participating, we will start offering the weekly meetings. No fee. No commitments. If you are interested to join or learn more, please email Katy Farnham at kfarnham@cvsdvt.org

And, whether you celebrate the upcoming holidays or not, let’s face it…this season is a perfect time to practice our leadership skills. December challenges us to navigate expectations and pressure galore, so without further ado, I will republish my annual reminder:
Years ago, as a new teacher, I learned the phrase "the week before the week before." It’s a statement educators know well as it describes the zaniness of a school community before holiday break. Behaviors ramp up. Anxiety ramps up. Why? Aren't the holidays and vacation supposed to be a happy time? There's nothing like the pressure and expectation of "happy" to deter actual happiness. Whether you just found out that you didn’t get into that early decision college...or whether your family doesn’t resemble that Hallmark Card on the shelf of CVS...or whether you just really miss someone who won’t be there this season...please know you are not alone! The holidays don’t have to be the BEST days of the year. Know that it’s okay for the holidays just to be kind of okay. And, yes, some years it’s okay for the holidays just to stink. So take the pressure off. Make the most of whatever comes your way. And maybe, just maybe, the holidays might live up to all the hype!

Student Celebrations
These four CVU students preformed in Clara Dreams last weekend at Spuce Peak Performing Arts Center. Pictured is Hannah Kuhlmeier, Gianna Petrunich, Alex Fox and Isabella Urch. We are so proud of all the dancers and their hard work. They study at the Elan Academy of Classical Ballet.
We encountered some awesome projects in the shop today. William walked us through the techniques of building a pingpong paddle and we got a quick look at true origin of Thor's hammer!
Write for Rights! Thank you to the many students who expressed their voices today. We had nearly 280 submissions!
From Jen Marriott: On Wednesday, December 6, Yoga/Mindfulness took a field trip to Hot Yoga Burlington. The class was led by owner, Bill O'Conner, a traditional 60 minute vinyasa style class. It was a hot sweet-sweaty mess, but so worth the joyful glow it produced after!
From Alison Duback: Shout out to our 80 amazing 11th and 12th grade Flight School Mentors who plan and lead our 9th grade peer group mentoring program. Flight School met for check-ins over the last 2 weeks. Mentors led discussions on classes and upcoming traditions like RISE and the Penguin Plunge, ate snacks, and played games. Pictured are Nichols groups decorating cookies and playing games.
From Katie Antos-Ketcham: EnAct's first annual Patagonia Film Festival was not only fun last Friday night, it also helped raise more than $300 for Seacology, an international nonprofit with a local connection that helps island communities prosper by protecting mangroves. EnAct would like to thank the businesses who supported the event by donating items to our raffle: Palmer Lane Maple, Palmer's Sugarhouse, Lake Champlain Chocolates, Skida, and Patagonia Burlington.

From Charlie MacFadyen: On Wednesday, the CVU Math League team traveled to Mt. Mansfield for the second meet of the season. There were 12 schools at the meet. After a bit of a slow start behind South Burlington and Essex, CVU gradually chipped away at the lead, and came away with the win in dramatic fashion-- scoring a perfect 75 on the team test! Enthusiasm and camaraderie were high!

On Sunday, December 10th, twenty members of our club volunteered at the Polar Express as elves. They stood in the rain to welcome four trainloads of local kids to the "North Pole". This event is a fundraiser for the Vermont Children's Trust to raise money for programs to help families all over the state. In addition, the Club held their annual Advisory Trivia competition on December 5th to raise money for Toys for Kids. They raised $510 and have helped fill the bin in the Main Office with gifts! Congratulations to the Mack/Mead and the Muessel/Johnson Advisories who dazzled us all with their knowledge about holidays around the world!
From Josh Rooney: On Thursday, December 14, former COO for UVM Health Network and former Secretary of Human Services, Al Gobeille joined our W1 Economics class for a robust discussion of how healthcare in the US is delivered, administered and paid for. Students engaged with Al across a wide variety of topics from prescription drug prices, comparing healthcare models and systems in other countries, US healthcare spending and the amount of federal dollars that go into healthcare to Al's experiences in high level leadership positions. Thanks to Al for coming to share his knowledge and wisdom with us!
From Peter Booth: The Class Of 2025’s Class Council would like to thank everyone (especially Volunteer Outreach Club!) for the amazing number of presents that we have managed to gather for children and families in our area that struggle during the holiday season. On Tuesday, December 19, all of these presents will be brought to St. Jude’s church to be distributed by the US Marines.
