A. MacArthur Barr Mission Statement
Preparing and inspiring students to apply learning in a changing, complex, and interdependent world.
Curriculum & Instruction
Digging deep into the digital world! đľď¸ââď¸ Students in Ms. Devita's class focused on evaluating sourcesâlearning to discern fact from fiction in the information age. Ms. Devita taught students to ask themselves: Is the source useful? Is the source authoritative? Is the source accurate?
Ms. Kousoulas and Ms. Fay's grade 8 English class restructuring a short response to make it meet the RACECER strategy. We are always growing as writers!
Students in Ms. Thompson's 8th grade art class address SEL and art together. Students use comfort blankets to get cozy and unleash their creativity.
Ms. McAree's 5th grade class uses photographs to practice making literal observations and inferential statements.
Extra Curriculars & Adventures at Barr
Modified Volleyball won their Dig Pink Game against Chestnut Ridge MS 25-20, 25-10, 25-11, 23-25, 25-17. Avalee Weir and Caroline Trombley led the team with 11 aces each and Emily El-Kadi led in kills with 5. It was an amazing effort by all.
Game on! â˝đ Excitement is in the air at our annual school soccer tournamentâwhere teamwork and sportsmanship shine! Barr kicked off their first homeroom recess tournament for the school year. Students engage in friendly competition and hope to win bragging rights for their homeroom (until the next month's tournament). Check back to see what homerooms reign supreme.
October is recognized across the country as National Bullying Awareness Month, and âUnity Dayâ (October 16) was created by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC) to âunite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.â Following a video presentation during homeroom, our 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders colored and personalized feathers to be added to a unity mural that will hang in the main staircase. The visual art installation serves as a reminder that all students should feel safe at Barr.
Awards & Recognition
Ms. Hedberg, Dr. Farrington, Ms. Feola and Ms. Manon (in order of appearance) make up the Barr clinician team. They ensure our students feel empowered by supporting their mental health and well-being on a daily basis.
Empowering voices, one vote at a time! Our student mock election brought democracy to life as Nanuet students engaged in their first civic. Students from each school in voted on an issue specific to their school as well as chose the next pet at the library. A special shout out to some of Barr's homeroom ambassadors for volunteering their time to ensure the vote went smoothly. **Special note: Emma (pictured on the right) was Tommy's homeroom rep last year. She did such a good job that she inspired him to run this year.
6th grade students continue the long standing Barr tradition of decorating your friends locker for their birthday. These girls take it a step farther and also help organize the locker as a birthday present. What a way to show kindness!
Community Events & Outreach
8th grade students participated in a 2 day Babysitting Workshop. Participants learned how to properly hold a baby and toddler, how to communicate effectively and rules to stay safe when alone in a house. At the end of the course all participants received a certificate of completion to show they were trained.
