Springer Families,

Yesterday was National School Resource Appreciation Day. The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a vital role and one that should be in every school across the nation. First and foremost, the SRO is one of the primary layers of safety and security in a building. They are the first responder in the building. They walk our hallways, monitor security cameras, provide traffic support to ensure smooth arrival and dismissal, and respond when needed to emergency situations. However, they also build relationships with our students and families. Developing trust in order to serve, which is their calling. This balance between law and order and relational capacity takes grace and precision.

Our SRO at Springer Middle School is Cpl. Stevens. She has been at Springer for years and is able to strike that necessary balance well so that our students, families, staff, and community are supported. For that and for her service, we are so thankful for Cpl. Stevens. If you get a chance, let an SRO know how much you appreciate all that they do for their school! Thank you to Cpl. Stevens and all of the amazing Brandywine School District SROs and Constables!

Starting in the 4th marking period Springer Middle School will be implementing a 1-to-1 cell phone pouch system for all students every day. Students will be required to place cell phones and smart watches into a pouch each morning. Students will be responsible for the pouch each day and will return it before dismissal. If staff see any cell phones after dismissal they will be required to turn their phone into the main office and repeat offenders will require having a parent or guardian come pick the phone up at Springer.

Our focus should be learning each day. We have seen an increase in cell phone related offenses. Additionally, we feel strongly that their is significant learning loss and undesirable behaviors occurring, which can be directly linked to the access students have to their cell phones. Our staff feel implementing this strategy, which has been done at schools across the state and country to rave results, will have a positive impact on the educational, social, and emotional experience our students will have at Springer Middle School.

I will be hosting Town Hall event on the evening of March 6 at 6:30pm to discuss any parent concerns with our new policy. I have attached a brief presentation below for review, which I will speak to more in depth on March 6. Last Saturday Springer Middle School and our Orchestra Director, Ms. Lee, welcomed students and families from across the district for an Honors Orchestra performance. Top students were selected from each orchestra department and were led in three different songs of different genres to a large crowd of families and supporters. Congratulations to all students who participated!

Last Thursday evening we held an 8th grade parent information night. The meeting included some updates to policies and information on upcoming events and initiatives at Springer. The presentation is attached below and please contact Dr. Seemans at sterling.seemans@bsd.de.k12.us with any questions.

Springer Middle School is celebrating Black History Month through highlighting important Black figures in our morning announcements, the Black History Month gallery walk in our cafeteria hallway, rotating presentation in the lobby, various fun and interactive lessons and activities, and a culminating performance at the end the month where students will have the opportunity to listen to musical performances from an outside group. We are excited to educate and inspire our students with valuable and impactful information and experiences all month long.

Congratulations to Springer JAZZ! Our award-winning Jazz Band performed this past Saturday night at the Night of Jazz Festival at Penncrest High School in Media, Pennsylvania. Our Jazz Band received an Outstanding rating for the festival, which was adjudicated by the Jazz faculty from Moravian College. The very first comment the band received from the judges was that they could not believe what they just saw and heard from the band’s performance.

This was a great tune up performance for Springer JAZZ, as in March, the band will be performing at the National Convention Center in Philadelphia for the National Jazz Festival.

KUDOS to our Jazz Band who is excelling on the stage and in the classroom. Led by Mr. Baronio, our Jazz Band continues to grow and impress everyone in and outside of the classroom and school.

At the last SFA meeting it was decided that an additional survey go out for parents to sign up to help volunteer for our 8th grade formal, which will take place on Saturday, May 17. Delaware’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) held its State Leadership Conference on February 5, 2025, at Bally's Dover. Among the attendees were BPA members from Springer, who took part in a variety of activities. These included competing in business-related events, attending workshops focused on developing an entrepreneurial mindset and fostering positive workplace relationships, and networking with other middle school students from around Delaware.

There are 6 artists of the month to kick off the new semester and February. Congratulations to Becca Bowman, Giselle Madden, Liz Snow, Leah Fowlkes, Philip O’Brien, and Charlotte Doyle. Their artwork is now on display outside of Mrs. Dooley’s room 161.

Congratulations to Violet Robbins (Clarinet) and Lucas Trievel (Mallet Percussion) on being selected to the Delaware All-State Band! Both students will perform with the 2025 All-State Band on March 22nd at Lake Forrest High School in Felton, Delaware. Special recognition to Tyler Overly (Alto Sax) and Sophia Schiff (Clarinet) for being first alternates.

In its fourth year, The Art Space at the Route 9 Library and Innovation Center is a program dedicated to offering the fundamentals of visual arts to creative middle and high school students. This FREE program is application based and is a structured creative training course offering four weeks of drawing classes, four weeks of painting classes, and four weeks of digital art classes. Participating teens will be rewarded in cash at the end of the 12-week course for the time spent in The Art Space in recognition of their hard work and dedication.

But that's not all—we've got sessions for you too! Parents, caregivers, and teachers will gain invaluable insights and tips on how to guide the next generation through the maze of academic and career choices in the STEM universe.

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a "Sneaker Ball" school dance on Friday, February 21 from 6pm-8pm. Students are encouraged to wear their best sneakers and dress casually for the dance. The cost of the dance is $5 and any student who has been nominated for a BARK band will get to go for free. Students who have 2 or less referrals and no suspensions from Friday, January 10 to Thursday, February 20th will be permitted to go to the dance.

On Thursday, February 6th their will be a brief meeting in lieu of the SFA meeting for 8th grade parents. We will be covering topics such as 8th grade promotion ceremony, next steps for high school, the 8th grade formal dance and more. We hope to see you in the Springer auditorium at 6:30pm.

With the limited space in our gym, we are requiring that any student who wishes to attend a basketball game needs to have their parent or guardian with them to attend. Students who wish to attend as spectators will need to check in at the door by an administrator. Students without their parent or guardian will be asked to leave. We will not permit a parent or guardian to bring multiple students who are not their direct caregiver.

When Springer students return in January we are excited to announce our return of our Homework club! The Springer Homework Club is a voluntary after-school program providing academic assistance to students. Homework Club is a program which is held from 3:15 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. on Wednesdays. They meet in room 184 which provides a quiet place to study for each student to assist them in completing their assignments. There will be supervision and access to teachers and school tutors who have been trained to assist students in their studies. A Google form will be added to students' counselor corner page in Schoology for students to sign up, but it can also be found below:
