Monday is World Diabetes Day and WC Petty is wearing BLUE.

Diabetes is a disease that affects about 37 million Americans and occurs when a person’s blood sugar is too high because their body is no longer able to produce insulin in the way it needs. November is National Diabetes Month in which the country teams up to learn more about diabetes and how to best manage it. Monday, November 14, is World Diabetes Day. At WCP, we will wear BLUE to support those living every day with Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that allows the body to get energy from food. The onset of Type 1 diabetes is not related to a person’s diet or lifestyle and is not something that can be outgrown. While it typically affects children, it may not be detected until a person is older. Recognizing the signs in someone who is not diagnosed may save a life. Someone experiencing the following symptoms may need to see a doctor:

• Frequent urination
• Extreme thirst
• Dry mouth
• Unexplained weight loss
• Increased appetite
• Feeling drowsy or lethargic
• Slow healing cuts
• Pain or numbness in your extremities
• Vision changes
• Fruity or sweet-smelling breath
• Nausea or vomiting
• Possible yeast infection

Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body is not using insulin properly, often called insulin resistance. In this type of diabetes, the pancreas makes extra insulin to compensate but eventually the pancreas is not able to keep up with the demand.

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that can develop during pregnancy in women who do not already have diabetes.

Dear Parents and Families:

We’re excited to invite you to our Scholastic Book Fair. Hosted by our staff, this event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school.

After missing out on many beloved traditions, our fall Book Fair will be a familiar, welcome, and safe event for our students.

Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from November 14-18 at W.C. Petty Elementary School Library. We will have extended hours during the family conferences on November 14 and November 17 from 3pm-8pm.

Our Book Fair offers eWallet, a safe and secure alternative to cash. Simply create a free account to add funds and/or invite family and friends to contribute so your child can select their own books. Any unused funds can be spent at The Scholastic Store Online or to fund a future eWallet.

If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Trimester 1 Report Cards Sent Home

On Friday, November 11th, you were emailed your child(ren)'s Trimester 1 Report Card. Please review the report card with your child. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Additional information for Grades K -5, including Trimester Criteria for Success documents and K-5 Report Card Brochure, can be found by visiting the district website.

iPad Information

Parent reminders regarding the new iPads:

• Stickers and/or labels should not be placed on the iPad or chargers.

• If there is an issue and an item is not working, please contact your building administrator to get a replacement as soon as possible.

• Please help with the expectation of having the iPad charged once the student comes to school. It is very important that the student has a charged iPad so that class and instruction time isn’t lost accomplishing this task.

• If possible, help show your student how to plug and unplug headphones in the headphone jack. The Technology Department has had numerous issues with broken plugs in the headphone jacks.

• Please remind your student that the iPads are for school use, not personal use. They should not be used for taking personal pictures outside of school.

• The iPads should be used for school-related work at home, not watching YouTube videos. YouTube can be a valuable educational tool when used appropriately. Please help us monitor this tool so that we can continue to utilize the value of it and not have the negative aspects.

Common Sense Media is a great source for parents to help teach their students about proper technology use and how to keep them safe using the internet. Antioch CCSD 34 uses some of the resources from this website as well to help with digital citizenship.
