Approximately 18% of the U.S. population identifies as Hispanic, and according to the U.S. Department of Education, one in four children is Hispanic. Throughout history and to this day, Hispanics continue to make substantial contributions to the American community. Authors like Sandra Cisneros tell stories of growing up as a Hispanic in America. Bakers like Ezeqiel Moreno in Los Angeles have grown businesses that are cornerstones of their communities. As the 2020 World Series plays out, who can forget Hispanic baseball legend Roberto Clemente. There are many Hispanic individuals who have helped make advancements in various industries and professions. Virtual Cultural Event
On Saturday, October 10, 2020, the German clubs at Travis HS and Clements HS had a joint activity to celebrate Oktoberfest. Since club activities need to be online this year, they had a joint activity: a “cooking show.” The officers of both clubs chose the recipe (Apfelkuchen, a coffee-cake type apple cake). They published the list of required ingredients ahead of time so that members could have everything for the recipe on hand. Two of the officers were the on-air chefs, and a third was their cameraman. The two groups gathered via Zoom, and the two officers demonstrated what to do while the others in the meeting cooked along with them at home. Even Mr. Hulse’s son got to join in the fun! Thank you to Mr. Hulse (THS) and Mr. Buck (CHS) for setting up this incredible cultural experience.
