Surfside Shark Bites
Week of October 7-11, 2024
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Good afternoon, Surfside families!
The first quarter of the year ends today. We have noticed that a majority of our students are in their groove, showing up to school, and getting their work done. In fact, we celebrated 10 seniors who finished their graduation requirements this week and are off to the next step in life....congratulations, graduates!
Our highlight of the week is our K-8 students. The wonderful efforts and attitudes of our elementary and middle school students are on full display as they show up to school with the most joyful greetings. Watching them get their work done and socialize is one of the many awesome features of our school. Thank you to our K-8 teachers who make our elementary and middle school program the special and unique experience that it is.
I want to take a moment to thank the parents on our school site council for spending time this week speaking with our students, touring our classrooms, and providing great ideas. We appreciate you!
Parents, please check your student's progress, attendance, and work completion rates on a regular basis. The best way to prevent falling behind is to keep up to date on your student's progress.
Should you or your student have any questions, please ask. That is why we are here.
Principal Frandsen
Weekly Construction Update
Construction update: This week the construction crews installed utilities, dug the footing for the large retaining wall to be installed along the west side of the property, and set up our basketball court just in time for basketball season. We especially appreciate our construction crews and leaders who have invested great effort to keep the construction zone separate from the school to ensure a safe, productive learning environment.

K-5 Updates
Dear Families,
Thank you for taking the time to make sure your child is understanding the material in the packets. We have a wonderful opportunity to help our child(ren) receive immediate feedback as they write, do math, grammar, handwriting, etc. so they can apply their learning immediately.
Writing Challenge:
Quick write: Give your child a topic and see what they can come up with in 5-10 minutes. For older students, this builds writing fluency where they can form words quicker to get their writing on paper.
Typing.com is also a great place for students to learn typing skills for fluency. You can create a free account for your child to use.
Important Dates:
Reminder: Please return Impact Aid Program Cards ASAP if you haven’t already done so
October 21-Nov 1: Grades 3-5 have a District Interim Assessment. More details to come next week

Thank you for another amazing week!
Interim CAASP Testing-
The week of October 21st 6th - 8th graders will be taking the CAASP Interim Tests in both ELA & Math. These are district mandated progress markers. These are proctored tests that can only be taken on District devices. Directions will be emailed to parents and students. Students who attend in-person sessions will complete them at school. Virtual students will have opportunities to join sessions from home.
Work Samples and P.E. logs were due Friday, October 11. Work samples submitted should reflect a high caliber of work. A great way to submit samples digitally is to use the Genius Scan App!
Please continue to monitor your child’s progress in their Edmentum courseware ensuring they remain on-pace with grades they can be proud of. P.E. assignments through the Google Classroom must be completed as they factor into your students P.E. grade. Thank you!
Federal Impact Survey Cards are due. Thank you for helping us complete this yearly task.

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
