JKES - 4th Grade Newsletter - Fourth Quarter Information
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we enter the final quarter of the school year, we are excited to share the topics your child will be exploring in the coming weeks. This is an important time of growth and learning for our students, and we want to keep you informed about what they will be studying.
Math: Measurement & Geometry
In math, we will be diving into measurement and geometry. Students will learn how to measure length, weight, and volume using both standard and metric units. They will also explore geometric shapes, including learning about angles, lines, and symmetry. By the end of the quarter, students will be able to solve problems involving measurements and identify key geometric properties.
Science: Virginia’s Natural Resources
In science, we will focus on Virginia’s natural resources. Students will learn about the state’s landforms, water resources, and types of plants and animals. They will also explore how humans use these resources and the importance of conservation. This unit will help students understand the connection between natural resources and our daily lives.
History: The Civil War & Changes in Our Country
In history, students will learn about the major economic differences that developed between the Northern and Southern states and how the inability to solve those conflicts led to the South seceding from the United States to form their own country. The result was the Civil War, lasting from 1861 to 1865.
Reading:
In reading, we are working on test-taking strategies in preparation for the upcoming SOLs. Students will continue to take bi-weekly CFAs (online reading assessments) to help them prepare. We will also move into a new Bookworms unit using the book My Life as a Book. Below shares what students will be exploring in this book unit. Excerpt taken from Bookworms: My Life as a Book is a novel with a strong narrative text structure. It is about a boy named Derek who wanted to enjoy his summer his own way and is dismayed when he finds out his mom signed him up for Learning Camp to strengthen his reading skills. As the summer progresses, though, Derek learns that he actually likes reading more
than he thought. Students will collaboratively create a combination events list and plot timeline to keep track of dates and important events in the story.
