November 2024
As we welcome November, we embrace the spirit of gratitude and reflect on the many things that make Island Montessori so special. This is a month to give thanks—for our dedicated teachers, curious students, and supportive families. We are excited to share all the wonderful events we have planned, from classroom activities that spark creativity and learning to community moments that bring us closer together. Let's take this time to celebrate the growth we've seen, the connections we've built, and the joy of learning that fills our halls. Together, we are grateful to be a part of the Island Montessori family, and we look forward to making this November one to remember!
In Peace

🌍Discovering Cultural Education in the Montessori Classroom🌎
In a Montessori classroom, cultural education is much more than memorizing facts about geography, history, science, or the arts. It’s about sparking curiosity and nurturing a student’s natural desire to learn about the world and their place within it.
The Montessori cultural curriculum is presented as a way to connect students to the universe and to each other. Materials in the classroom, such as maps, timelines, and scientific models, are designed to capture the student’s attention. Through independent exploration and observation, students are encouraged to ask questions, make connections, and ultimately gain new knowledge. Whether they’re learning about the continents, exploring life cycles, or understanding historical events, they are empowered to develop their own ideas and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
For example, geography materials like puzzle maps allow students to physically manipulate pieces, helping them internalize the concept of continents, countries, and their relative locations. In science, students might use three-part cards to explore botany or zoology, using observation to classify and group information. This active engagement fosters a sense of discovery, making learning a continuous, joyful experience!
As students interact with these cultural materials, they also develop skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. They begin to see how each subject connects to the bigger picture, fostering an understanding of the interconnectedness of all things. This is a key principle of Montessori’s cosmic education, where students are encouraged to explore the relationships between people, cultures, and the natural world.
Join Us for a Deeper Dive into Cultural Education To further support your understanding of how cultural subjects are taught in the Montessori classroom, we invite you to attend our upcoming family workshop with Kelly Henrikson and Carrie Dworshak for Coffee and Connections. During this session, we’ll explore the materials used across different grade levels and discuss ways you can support your child’s cultural learning at home. Please join us on November 22 at 8:30 for this enriching experience! We look forward to sharing this experience with you! RSVP here
A Message About Our State Report Card Letter
Dear Families,
We recently sent home a letter regarding our state report card, and we understand it may have caused concern for some. While the results reflect a step backward, we want to reassure you that we are, first and foremost, a Montessori school—deeply committed to our philosophy and mission. Our staff firmly believes in meeting each child where they are and nurturing them into lifelong learners. We know that with patience, dedication, and the strength of our school community, we will continue to help our students grow. If you have any questions or concerns, I welcome the opportunity to talk with you. Thank you for your continued trust and support as we move forward together.
