The End of the School Year Approaches
As we approach the final stretch of the school year, I want to take a moment to share some important thoughts about this time of transition for kids.
There are just three weeks remaining in the 2024-2025 school year. The end of one school year, approaching summer recess, and transition to a new grade can bring on heightened emotions for kids. Along with excitement and anticipation for summer and a variety of prefered activities, it can also be a time of uncertainty, anxiety, and sadness for children. Some students are already starting to feel the emotions of having to say goodbye to their teachers and classmates, and others may be thinking about the transitions ahead of moving up to a new grade or transitioning to middle school. Summer looks different for every child. The absence of the consistency of the school schedule and community that school provides can feel unsettling for some.
We still have a lot of teaching and learning over the next few weeks. We as a staff are working to maintain a sense of community and emotional stability for all students during this time. As parents and caregivers, I encourage you to keep the lines of communication open with your child during this time of transition. I have included some links below for more information on supporting your kids through these times of transition.
Together, we can help students finish the school year feeling confident, supported, and connected.

First Day of School Supplies!
Once again this year we are partnering with 1st Day School Supplies to offer an easy way for parents to purchase school supplies for their kids for the upcoming school year. The kits are available for purchase online and will be delivered to school before the start of the new school year. Your student will show up on the first day of school and their supply kit will be waiting for them in their classroom.
Online ordering is open now through July 1st. I know it seems early, but before you know it, summer will be here. It's important you order your supplies before it's too late or supplies run out. Start the school year with the exact supplies your teacher requested and give your child the confidence they need to conquer next year! Order today! Please reach out if you have any questions.
Enrollment for Kindergarten/Developmental Kindergarten
Kindergarten enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year begins on Monday, February 3, 2025. District-wide enrollment for all kindergarten programs, including Developmental Kindergarten, is processed through our Central Enrollment Office. All enrollments into Royal Oak Schools are done online.
Kindergarten Age Requirements
A resident child must be five (5) years of age on or before September 1st in order to be eligible to attend kindergarten.
If a child is not five (5) years of age by the September 1st enrollment eligibility date, but will be five (5) years of age no later than December 1st, the parent/guardian may still enroll the child in kindergarten. The parent must notify the school district, in writing, prior to the beginning of the school year. Notification, by way of a completed Kindergarten Age Waiver, must be received in order for a child born between September 1 and December 1 to be enrolled in kindergarten.
If you need assistance navigating the online process or do not have a home computer, please call Theresa Baughman at 248-435-8400 x 1260. Appointments are highly recommended if you'd like to enroll in person.

Birthday Recognition
Consistent with health and wellness goals and cognizant of various student and staff allergies, Royal Oak Elementary schools recognize student birthdays with non-food-based celebrations. We do recognize birthdays as special days and will recognize a child’s birthday with individual recognition by the classroom teacher. Each teacher will inform you of the specific classroom birthday recognition practice. The students will also have their names announced on the school broadcast and receive a birthday pencil from the office. Please do NOT send food or beverages as birthday treats.
Special Message on School Attendance
Please see the August 18th, 2023 edition of the Roadrunner Report for a special message about attendance.
