COMMITMENT TO LEARNING
Congratulations to Waunakee Community High School, which was named to the 2024 AP School Gold Honor Roll! The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results and broadening access for students.
Schools can earn the Honor Roll recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing their school’s college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness. The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
Waunakee Community High School had 70% of seniors who took at least one AP Exam during high school, 57% of seniors scoring a three or higher on at least one AP Exam, and 20% of seniors who took five or more AP Exams!
To all our students, teachers, staff, and family members who made this possible, your dedication, hard work, and support did not go unnoticed. On behalf of the Waunakee Community School District, thank you for your commitment to learning.

CROSSING GUARD SHORTAGE
We want to inform you that the Woodland Drive and Simon Crestway intersection near Waunakee Community Middle School will no longer be staffed by a crossing guard, due to a staffing shortage. Safety remains our priority, and we ask all students to exercise caution by using the traffic lights and slowing down when walking or biking through this area.
Thank you for helping us reinforce these safety practices with your child. Thank you for understanding and we apologize for this inconvenience.
If you or someone you know are interested in becoming a crossing guard for our school district, please reach out to (608) 849-2000 or submit an interest form.

FROM THE SCHOOL TO CAREER COORDINATOR
November 17-23 is National Apprenticeship Week!
On Monday, November 17, NAW recognizes all of the Youth Apprentices who take the initiative to seek out work based learning opportunities that support future career pathway goals. This year at WCHS, we want to recognize the 67 junior and senior Youth Apprenticeship students who are working in our local communities in areas such as Business, Finance, Marketing, Health Science, Construction, STEM, Auto, Information Technology, Broadcasting, and Education. We appreciate the support from our local mentors who work at the job sites with our students, the parents who value the program for their students, the students for their dedication to learning, and our own district staff for being YA Mentors to 10 of our youth apprenticeship students (education, marketing, broadcast journalism)! Please check out our district and CTE (@WaunakeeCTE) social media pages to see all of the incredible opportunities our YA students are involved in.
Families or students who would like more information on the YA Program (available to grades 11 and 12) should reach out to Michelle McGlynn, michellemcglynn@waunakee.k12.wi.us.

LED LIGHT THERAPY
Winter is tough not just because of the cold in Wisconsin, but because of the darkness. Soon, we'll be going to school in the dark, and then driving home in the dark. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects millions of Americans each year as the loss of daylight affects our circadian rhythms in addition to our brain's hormones serotonin and melatonin. The LMTC has four LED Light Therapy lamps available for checkout to use at home if you are someone who could benefit from the use of them during the darker days of the next several months.

COUNSELING OFFICE CONNECTION
Junior Post High School Planning Night
The high school counseling office will be holding a meeting for all Junior students and their parents/guardians on Tuesday, December 3 at 6:30 pm in the High School Performing Arts Center. The main purpose of this meeting is to help with the post high school planning process and will include expert representatives from UW System Schools, Madison Area Technical College, Wisconsin Independent and Private Colleges, a representative from UW Madison, as well as an expert in apprenticeships. This portion of the presentation, as well as the handouts, are incredibly beneficial as you explore any post high school education. If you have any questions about this meeting, please contact the high school counseling office at 608-849-2115.
College Reps Visit
A college representative will be available to meet with juniors and seniors in the Counseling Office during Contact Time on the following days:
Tuesday, November 19: Michigan Tech
Wednesday, November 20: UW-Stout
To attend a session, students should sign up in FlexiSched under the Counseling Office on Monday, November 18.
Madison College Virtual Appointments
Our Madison College admissions representative, Katie Blanchard, now offers virtual appointments for students who have questions about Madison College. These meetings will take place on Fridays between 10am and 1pm. Students can sign up for a 30-minute session using this link: Book an Appointment with Katie Blanchard
✅DIRECT ADMIT
Seniors, if you received a Direct Admit offer, this is a reminder to view the next steps checklist and complete the Direct Admit Form via the UW Admissions Pathway Portal. The submission of a Direct Admit Form is not a formal commitment to attend a UW. This form connects students with the UW universities they are interested in attending, and will allow universities to communicate important next steps to students. The form must be submitted no later than May 1, 2025, but submitting it sooner is recommended.
There are virtual “walkthroughs” of the Direct Admit Form for students participating in the Direct Admit Wisconsin program. The webinar will walk you through the University of Wisconsin Admissions Portal and how to submit Direct Admit Forms. Register Here for the webinar on November 19 from 4:00-5:00 PM.
FINANCIAL AID NIGHT
A financial aid night presentation is scheduled for November 18 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Please use THIS LINK to access the virtual meeting.
Sarah Doebereiner of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Financial Aid Office will be present to provide an overview of all things financial aid, and will also share information about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) -- a necessary application for families to qualify for financial aid. Students and guardians will receive important information and will have the opportunity to ask questions. The FAFSA will be available to complete in December which was a change last year with the new application rollout. I will also take time to briefly present about local scholarships and where students can find scholarships we are notified of.
The information included about College Goal Wisconsin. College Goal Wisconsin is a beneficial event that provides free information and assistance to families who want help completing the FAFSA. Participation in College Goal Wisconsin will give you access to expert advice, and students can enter a scholarship drawing for a chance to win a one-time college scholarship. Here is a link to the College Goal Wisconsin website for more information.
Please mark your calendars for Financial Aid Night. If you are unable to attend there will be a recording of the session as well as materials to review at a later date. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Kim Bonsett-Veal, High School Counselor.

HEALTH UPDATE
Positive Pertussis Cases
Cases of Pertussis, also known as Whooping Cough, are increasing in Wisconsin and nationwide. WCSD has had many positive cases since July. Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory illness that may begin like a common cold, but develops into a severe cough that can last for weeks.
To reduce the risk of transmission in our school buildings, the following is recommended:
Stay home for 5 days while on antibiotic therapy for those who are diagnosed with pertussis or a medical provider is treating as a probable case
Stay updated on vaccines, including DTaP and Tdap, which help protect against Pertussis
Cover your cough and wash your hands often
For additional information, click here. To report a positive case of Pertussis in your home, please contact your school’s health office.
Thank you for your support,
Jenny Sydow, RN
