5/3/24 Oakmont Update
May 3, 2024
Dear Families,
It was so much fun to see you all last Saturday at the Taste of Oakmont! The event couldn't have been better. There was delicious food tastings from around the world; excellent performances by our talented students in the Glee Club, Cheer and Tumble, Variety Show, CHS Jazz Band and Color Guard; and let's not forget about the laughter all afternoon. This event was a success due to our PFA's countless hours of planning, donations from our families, and artwork from our teachers and students. Thank you to everyone for your work and for attending this event.
Next week, students in grades three through six will take the annual California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Testing will take place over three weeks and completion of each section is untimed, so students will have time to think and not need to rush to finish. It is important for all Owls to make their very best effort. Here are some resources to help you support your child at home during testing.
- CAASPP Starting Smarter website - ideas for supporting your student as they get ready for testing, example questions, and more
- Test Anxiety graphic - strategies to combat stress about testing
- 5 Tips for State Testing Success - Five things you can do at home to set your child up for success!
Testing will begin at 8:30 and will run until their scheduled recess time. It's important to give your child time to get to school on-time without feeling rushed. Any students in testing grades that arrive after 8:30 will not be allowed to go to class and will be sent to a non-testing class.
Please do not send snacks/food treats for your child's class for testing.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week: May 6-10
This week presents a wonderful opportunity for us to show our gratitude for the tireless efforts, passion, and commitment of Oakmont's staff to nurturing the growth of our students. See the flyer below for some ideas.
May is Foster Care Awareness Month
This month we are highlighting the impact of foster care and celebrating the contributions of foster families, caregivers, volunteers, mentors, and community partners. Fostering is about building strong support networks and together we can create a brighter future for all children, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive in a safe and nurturing environment. Families impacted by the foster care system spend a lot of time working collaboratively with social workers, educators, and healthcare professionals to ensure that children’s needs are met comprehensively.
Let's join together to empower children and families through foster care awareness.
For more information on how you can help, please reach out to Rosa Leong, Liaison of Youth and Family Services at rleong@cusd.claremont.edu.

CEF Slice of Summer Scholarship Opportunities
The Slice of Summer program is back, offering full-day (8:30am-4:30pm) and half-day programs—either AM Slice of Enrichment or PM Slice of Fun—for 1st to 6th grade students. We also continue to offer engaging classes and workshops called SLICE Journeys for 1st to 12th grade students. The Slice program runs for eight weeks (June 18-Aug 9).
Limited need-based scholarships are available thanks to generous program sponsors and a Claremont CBO grant for CUSD students with demonstrated financial need or special circumstances identified by the school principal or guidance counselor who will benefit from the opportunities the SLICE of Summer program provides. SLICE scholarship recipients can receive a discount of up to 80% off the tuition rate through a simple application and verification process.
