Wolverine Weekly Volume #6
AES weekly updates on school activities and events.
October 7-11, 2024
Thank you for coming to AES for Parent Teacher Conferences or reaching out for a phone conference with your child's teacher this past week! And thank you for supporting your child's reading habits with a purchase at the Scholastic Book Fair. Proceeds will be used to purchase books for classrooms and our school library.
If you weren't able to access Rooms, yet, please call the office and we will assist you. And if you didn't receive new dashboard signs for parent pick-up, you will receive them this week in your child's takehome folder. We have updated car dashboard signs for you to use to help us identify which student you are picking up. We appreciate you using these signs every day. You will also receive any forms from the start of the school year that haven't yet been completed. Please complete and send them back with your child.
This week, we're excited to show our Atherton school spirit and join in the Atherton homecoming festivities. Please see the flyer below for our AES Spirit Days. This Wednesday, October 9th, is another early dismissal day, with dismissal at 1:58pm. And next week, on Tuesday, October 15th at 10am we are planning a Parent Connection session focused on supporting your child's mental health. All parents are invited to join this conversation in our school library. Coffee, juice and donuts will be served. Please RSVP by calling 810-591-0604.
Thank you for your support!

AES Halloween Costume Information
As you begin to plan for Halloween and consider if your Wolverine will wear a costume to school, please follow these AES guidelines for Halloween Costumes.
- Costumes must be school approporiate: no blood, gore, or scariness.
- Students should not wear masks or face paint.
- If your child would like to wear their costume to school on Oct. 31, they must wear it to school. Students will not be able to change during the day.
The AES Halloween parade and parties and will be taking place in the morning on Thursday, October 31st. As this is a half day of school, students will be dismissed at 12:05pm.
If you would like to volunteer in the classroom for the Halloween party, please contact your
child's teacher to see what's still needed and submit the volunteer form in plenty of time for the background check and approval process to be completed.
Lost and Found Items
Is your wolverine missing a sweatshirt or coat? Please ask your student to take a look through the lost and found items in the lobby. I encourage you to add your child's name to jackets, coats, and sweatshirts so the owner can be easily identified if lost and found,
Extra Set of Clothes
Please keep an extra set of clothes in your child's backpack to be prepared for accidents or spills.
The office doesn't always have the correct sizes. Thank you for your help with this!
School Attendance
Attendance is key to a student's success at school. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool and elementary so children learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and beyond.
Attendance Works is an organization the supports parents and schools to help students attend school regularly. Please click on this link for more information about what you can do to help your child develop good habits for school attendance - Elementary Attendance Flyer Link.
The Atherton Attendance Policy expects students to be at school each day and arrive on time. At times, children are too sick to attend school. Please contact the school office at 810-591-0604 to report your child's absence and submit a note from the doctor the following day to have absences medically excused. We will communicate through attendance letters and phone calls when absences are greater than 10% and work with you to develop a plan for improved attendance. County level attendance liaisons will be involved as needed to provide additional services. We really miss our students when they aren't at school!

October Monthly School Theme - Empathy
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you
climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." --Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird
So what does this mean exactly?
What is Empathy?
The term “empathy” is used to describe a wide range of experiences. Emotion researchers generally define empathy as the ability to sense other people’s emotions, coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling.
Contemporary researchers often differentiate between two types of empathy: “Affective empathy” refers to the sensations and feelings we get in response to others’ emotions; this can include mirroring what that person is feeling, or just feeling stressed when we detect another’s fear or anxiety. “Cognitive empathy,” sometimes called “perspective taking,” refers to our ability to identify and understand other people’s emotions.
This is something our AES staff will be discussing, modeling and teaching throughout the month of October.
Please ask your child how they are showing empathy each day and discuss what that means at home, too.

From our Atherton School Nurse
As we settle into the new school year, please ensure that your child's immunization records are up to date. Michigan law requires that students be immunized in order to attend school. Certified immunization waivers are only available through the local health department.
If your child is ill, please keep them home from school. Students must be fever free (without the use of medications), and have had no vomitting, or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
If your student has asthma, a severe allergy, seizure, or any other chronic illness, please contact the school so a care plan can be implemented.
Please turn all emergency medications and required forms into the office. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school and community healthy.

Have you downloaded the Atherton App? Did you accept the invitation to join your student's classroom Rooms?
Atherton has moved classroom news and teacher communications to families to Rooms. To access these communications, parents and guardians will need to download the Atherton App and accept the invitation to join your child's classroom Rooms. Invitations were sent out from edurooms.com on Thursday, September 5th. If you didn't receive an invitation, please contact your child's teacher or call the school office at 810-591-0604. Arrival and Dismissal
Parent Loop:
Thank you, families, who use the parent drop-off and pick-up loop, for getting in line and staying in line throughout the process to keep everyone safe!
For families who pick-up their student(s) at the end of the school day, please display the student's first and last name and grade level on the passenger side of your dashboard. This will allow us to quickly call for your student and get them ready to walk out to you once your vehicle is in one of the pick-up slots. Our goal is to have a safe and quick parent pick-up loop every day!
District Bus Transportation:
Our transportation department now has 4 bus drivers, which will allow for shorter rides for some of our AES students but did impact routes this week. Thank you for your patience with us as we finalize routes and help students learn which bus they ride to and from school. Please click on this memo from the Atherton Transportation Team.
Communicating Changes to Your Student's Transportation Plan:
In the event you need to change your student's transportaion plan from school for the day, our AES office must have that information before 3:00 pm. No changes will be made after 3pm. This is the only way we can maintain a safe, accurate, speedy, and efficient dismissal.
Open House Paperwork
Please complete all paperwork that you received during our AES Open House, if you haven't already done so, and return each of the completed documents to your child's teacher. It's important for us to have these on file in the AES school office.
Calling All Volunteers!
Would you like to volunteer in your child's classroom? Help out with class parties? Chaperone your
child's field trip? Help our Parent Group with activities? To follow safety protocols, volunteers must complete a volunteer form which will create a background check. Please complete the form located here, then return to the office. All volunteers must have clearance prior to volunteering with our AES Wolverines.
AES Parent Group Meetings
Our next meeting is for Parent Connection focused on Student Mental Health on October 15th at 10am. And the next Parent Group / Advisory meeting will be November 10th at 10am. All parents and guardians are invited! Hope to see you there!
