Salk Seahawk Scoop
Week of 5/4/2025
Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is this week. As you know, we have an incredibly caring and wonderful staff at Salk. In addition to supporting our students' academic growth, our staff is also working s hard to support our students' individual social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
As we prepare for Appreciation Week, I encourage you to work with your children to pick at least one member of the staff who is making a difference in their life. Then send that staff member an email, have your child draw a picture, send in a card, etc., to let them know. These small gestures take just a few minutes and mean SO MUCH to our deserving teachers, office staff, custodians, support staff, and lunch aides.
Please find a a couple printable cards linked below for your convenience.
Kindergarten and Second Grade Writing Celebration
To celebrate a year of growth and creativity, our kindergarten and second grade classes teamed up for a special end-of-year writing celebration! Each student was paired with a buddy from the other grade to share their writing pieces. As they proudly read their stories and writing to one another, students enjoyed juice boxes and cookies, making the event both fun and meaningful. It was a wonderful way to build connections between grade levels and celebrate their hard work. Both the kindergarten and second grade students had a blast!
Macomb County Bar Foundation - Law Day 2025
We’re proud to share that students from Salk participated in the Macomb County Bar Foundation’s 2025 Law Day contest. This year’s theme was “The Constitution’s Promise: Out of Many, One.” Our students created artwork inspired by the theme, and we are thrilled to announce that Anna Khoma, a student in Ms. Sally’s class, won third place for her drawing!
Anna and her mom attended the Awards Presentation and Law Day Celebration on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the Macomb County Administration Building, where she was honored for her outstanding work.
Congratulations, Anna! We are so proud of your creativity and achievement!
Salk Students Shine at Wrestling State Finals and Nationals!
We are excited to share some incredible news about two of our very own Salk student athletes! This past month, Caine Hirth and Colton Tucker proudly represented Fraser Schools as part of the Fraser Wrestling Club at the Wrestling State Finals in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the Nuway Nationals in Grand Rapids.
History was made at the State Finals when Caine Hirth took 1st place for his age and weight, becoming the club’s first-ever state champion! Caine continued his impressive performance by placing 7th at the Nuway Nationals the following week.
Colton Tucker also showcased remarkable skill and determination, earning 7th place at the Nuway Nationals against some very tough competition.
Both students have demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship on and off the mat. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, dedication, and the way they represented our school community. Please join us in congratulating Caine and Colton along with all the Salk students on the Fraser Wrestling Club on their amazing accomplishments!
Way to go, Salk Stars!
M-STEP Testing is Continues!
Each spring, the State of Michigan and the US Department of Education (USDE) require us to assess students in certain subject areas through the M-STEP, PSAT and SAT. The assessments provide the district with a snapshot of student achievement at the state, district, and building levels. Individual student results will also be shared with parents.
The tentative assessment dates for M-Step are as follows:
3rd Grade
Tuesday, May 6 - Math
4th Grade
Make-ups
5th Grade
Complete
6th Grade
Complete
Please ensure that your child is well rested on their testing day. They should come to school with a fully charged iPad .
Please note- We have makeup days built into our testing schedule, so if your child is exhibiting any symptoms of illness on their testing day- be sure to keep them home.
Also, due to recent updates in State testing procedures, cell phones, smart watches, and any bluetooth device (including headphones) MUST be secured during testing. We encourage students to leave these devices home on testing days when possible. When not possible, devices will be powered down and secured during testing
Band Concert
Last week, our talented 5th and 6th grade band students took to the high school gym for a fantastic concert performance. It was a wonderful event showcasing the impressive growth and musical skills of both groups. The students sounded amazing and truly demonstrated how much they’ve improved over the year.
What makes this event even more special is that all of our elementary schools came together to perform—with only one combined rehearsal! Their hard work and collaboration were on full display.
A big thank you to Ms. Krantz and Ms. Fleming for putting together such a successful concert. And thank you to all the families and community members who came out to support our musicians!
Hunt's Gymnastics Visits Salk!
This past week, our students were treated to an exciting onsite gymnastics course thanks to Hunt’s Gymnastics! During their gym classes, students had a blast exploring balance, coordination, and movement through fun and engaging activities. They even got to run a mini ninja course. It was a fantastic opportunity to try something new and stay active.
A big thank you to Hunt’s Gymnastics for providing this awesome experience for our students—we appreciate your partnership and generosity!

Canvas- Parent Access
All Fraser classroom teachers provide instruction, resources, activities, and assessments to students utilizing the Canvas LMS. As a result, students have continuous access to the course materials and information regarding their achievement.
Parents/Guardians can also have continuous access to their student’s course materials and grades in Canvas by creating a parent/observer account. In addition, parents of multiple students can easily switch between their students to view grades and assignments within the same parent account.
All sign up information and resources are provided on the Fraser website.
Important reminders when using Canvas:
- Canvas works best in Chrome
- Please do not install the Canvas app (for parents or students). We are not supporting it as our staff and students are utilizing the web-based version of Canvas and it looks and works differently.
- If you signed up and paired with your students last year, you still have access to those students and their new courses this year.
- If you need to add more students to your account this year, please follow the directions provided below.
- If you have forgotten your password, you can use the Forgot Password? link on the parent sign in page. Then, enter the email address you used to set up the account to receive a password reset email.
- If you have forgotten the email you used, please reach out to Kim Keith, Kimberly.keith@fraserk12.org, for additional assistance.
Downloadable directions are linked below. In addition, helpful videos and walk-throughs may be found linked HERE.
Charlie the Therapy Dog
Charlie has made visits to Salk the last couple of years with great success. Students are happy to see him and he really brightens the mood. Charlie will make his next visit in two weeks.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. As a reminder, parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Rules for Interacting with Charlie:
Use calm bodies and inside voices when around Charlie.
Always ask before petting Charlie.
Don't take food around Charlie/feed Charlie
