SST1 Professional Development Series
Audience - Building Administrators, PBIS Coordinators and Teams, Attendance Team Members and/or anyone involved in the attendance of their students.
Time - Participants may choose between 8:15 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. OR 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. each day (the afternoon session is a repeat of the morning session)
Contact Hours - 2 per session
Location - Virtual
Description - State Support Team Region 1 is hosting a four session virtual series that will enable participants to gain the strategies and resources they need to implement and support student attendance in their school and/or district. Attendance at all four sessions is strongly encouraged, but is not mandatory.
Session 1: January 29, 2025
How to use the Early Warning Tool
Amy Szymanski, Secondary Transition and Workforce Development Statewide Specialist will demonstrate how to use the Early Warning Tool, which is an evidence-based process for identifying, supporting and monitoring students who show signs that they may not meet key educational milestones, up to and including graduating from high school. The tool provides up to date data on attendance, behavior, and course grades.
Session 2: February 3, 2025
Instructional Strategies to Support Student Engagement
Ralph Schade and Chelsea Bodnarik, SST1 Consultants will share instructional strategies to support student engagement. This will include the Science of Learning and the importance of creating Cognitive Conflict for motivation.
Session 3: March 4, 2025
How Family Engagement Impacts Absenteeism
Tamie Cruz, SST1 Consultant will look at how family engagement can impact absenteeism and provide strategies to increase engagement of all families, including those of English Learners and Students with Disabilities.
Session 4: April 29, 2025
Rethinking the High School Experience to Support Student Attendance
Lisa Hite, SST1 Consultant will share ideas for rethinking the high school experience to support student attendance. Opportunities to add career tech classes at the middle school and high school will be shared as well as unique school day structures that could be utilized to support student attendance.
