Important Safety Reminders
Total Solar Eclipse - Monday, April 8, 2024
"Pennsylvania has the distinct privilege of once again being in the direct line of a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The last time Pennsylvania was in direct line with a total eclipse was 1806. While the path is somewhat westwardly oriented in comparison to the last total eclipse, much of Pennsylvania will lie within the paths of totality or partial totality."
The schedule for Pennsylvania viewing is as follows:
The partial eclipse will begin at 1:59 PM.
The total eclipse will begin at 3:15 PM.
The total eclipse will end at 3:20 PM.
The partial eclipse will end at 4:35 PM.
As you can see, this rare event will take place over our dismissal times. With that in mind, we would like to share some important viewing reminders for families to share with their students.
"Observers should always use solar viewing or eclipse glasses, hand-held solar viewers made with sun filter film, or an alternative safe solar viewing method, such as a pinhole projector, to view the sun. This includes when watching a partial or annular eclipse, or before or after totality for a total solar eclipse. Even a short glimpse of the sun can permanently damage the rods and cones in the human retina. Eye safety precautions during the eclipse should be followed when viewing from both indoor and outdoor locations.
NASA indicates that viewing during the fleeting moments of totality during a total solar eclipse can be safe;however, extreme caution must be practiced because totality is dependent on the full magnitude of effect and viewing angles. In some locations totality lasts only one second, in others the span may be as long as 4 minutes 28 seconds.
Safe solar viewers are thousands of times darker than even the darkest sunglasses. Eclipse viewing apparatuses should comply with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard."

BASD Students Expand Their Efforts to Save Hockey Dek
BASD students Natalie Van Druff and Lily Walter, both 11, recently attended another New Hanover Township meeting as part of their ongoing efforts to save their beloved hockey dek. During the meeting they presented a movie trailer they wrote, directed, and starred in with a lot of their hockey friends. They also rolled out a t-shirt fundraising sale aimed at raising funds for the dek improvements.
Mrs.Van Druff, Natalie's mom, shared, "The next meeting will be Thursday, April 4th where there will be a vote. We are so proud of her, Lilly, and all of the kids working hard and parents coming together for this grassroots effort."
We are proud, too! Natalie and Lily, Best of luck as you pursue your passion project!
The Save the Love design was created by Natalie, 11. She and Lilly, also 11, launched this fundraiser to benefit efforts to improve the New Hanover Community Park Hockey Rink through Pick Up Sticks Hockey.

Three BASH Students Travel to PMEA Region V Chorus Festival
Written by Mr. Brunner, BASH Choir Director
Recently three BASH seniors traveled to Messiah University to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Region V Chorus festival. Ava Puleo, Emily Wambold, and Rosalie Camper spent two days under the direction of Dr. Rachel Cornacchio learning and performing choral repertoire. They were joined by 200 singers from across the south central and eastern parts of the state, all representing the best of their high schools.
While at the festival, students had to re-audition for seating placements, proving that they prepared the repertoire to a panel of judges. Rosalie Camper ranked 6th of 25 in the Alto 1 section. This secured her a spot to advance to the PMEA All- State Chorus. She will be traveling to Erie, Pennsylvania to be a member of this elite chorus from April 17-20. She will be joining over 200 of the best singers in the state, working under the baton of Dr. Christopher Jackson, the conductor of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem.
I am extremely excited for Rosie to have this opportunity. She is a diligent and talented student. I am very proud of her and all my students’ accomplishments.
Congratulations to all of you! #BASHBEARSRaiseTheirVoices Our best wishes to Rosie
as she travels to Erie!

Giant's Feeding School Kids Campaign 2024
The GIANT Company is excited to kick off its Feeding School Kids Campaign to support our district’s meal program. The campaign kicked off on January 1 and will run through the end of March. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised at our local GIANT store on Holly Road in Gilbertsville through ‘round up’ will benefit our school district.
‘Round up’ is Giant’s program of asking its customers if they want to round up their grocery bills for non-profit organizations. BASD has been the recipient of their winter program generosity in the past. Through their giving, we have offset the rising cost of food and provide nourishing meals to all students regardless of their ability to pay.
Along with customer generosity, The GIANT Company will match up to $100,000 of dollars raised across their stores.
Thank you for your ongoing generosity!

WES Receives Book Vending Machine
Press Release and Photos by Amy Muzopappa, Former Executive Director of FBE
There’s a new currency at Washington Elementary and it’s kindness. It’s courtesy. It’s respect. This is part of a new initiative called “You Matter” being spearheaded by principal Lisa Derenzo. She said the program focuses on celebrating the genius in all children.
As part of that celebration and to wrap up Read Across America Week, the Foundation for Boyertown Education presented the school with a book vending machine. The machine accepts special coins that can be earned by students demonstrating behavioral merit.
“The machine not only gets kids excited about reading, but also provides a lesson in setting goals and earning rewards, by being good role models,” said Amy Muzopappa, the Executive Director for the Foundation.
Derenzo said “I just love to read to kids and I do it every chance I get.” The Book Vending Machine will be permanently placed in the school lobby, where each and every student will pass it by on their way to and from school. “We want to get kids excited about books!”
For some elementary students, the ability to choose their own book is a far greater reward than just being handed a book. On that note, the vending machine is as much of a positivity tool as it is a book dispenser. Teachers find the positives in each student and the tokens reward that behavior.
“This is just the first of what we hope many book vending machines for the Boyertown Area School District,” said Muzopappa. “There are 6 Elementary schools in our district. Our hope is to eventually see book dispensers in all of them.”
