First Grade News
Welcome to Mrs. Frankie Nelson who will be student teaching in first grade.
Penguins in Peril
Skills for the week: Students will: review the genres Fiction and Non-Fiction and learn strategies to identify the type of book they are reading, learn about synonyms and shades of meaning and the -ow and -oa spelling pattern.

* Did you know that words that have the long o sound in the middle of the word will typically be the oa spelling pattern and words with the long o sound at the end of the word will have the -ow pattern?
Our spelling words start to get more challenging now and your child may need more practice at home.
Math Skills for the week:
This week the students will: review the meaning of the = symbol and are introduced to the < and > relation symbols, determine if addition and subtraction equations are true and make false equations true, and to apply place value understanding to write numbers up to 100 on number scrolls, and measuring 3 separate line segments and finding a total.

Greater than, Less than and Equal
The children will learn about the 3 comparing symbols and apply them in addition and subtractions sentences.
Equal
Students will learn to determine if the equations on each side are true and if not correct one side to make it true.
Number scrolls
We will be working on creating our number scrolls to practice counting numbers beyond 100.

Reminders
- We are entering the 2nd half of the year. You will notice that academics will become more challenging. Students may need additional support with spelling word practice, reading AR and math homework. Students will be expected to write their first and last name on their papers.
