James Island Elementary Newsletter
OCTOBER

Principal's Message
Dear Families,
September has flown by, and October is already here! We are off to a great start here at James Island Elementary! Students and teachers are making strong connections and are off and running with engaging lessons and educational activities!
The month of October is filled with observances and fun activities. Please complete the volunteer form on the CCSD website so that you may come into our learning environment and participate in these fun times. If you need help completing the volunteer form, please stop by the front office, and Mrs. Boyd will be happy to help.
November 7 has been set aside for family data conferences. Teachers will be reaching out to schedule a conference to discuss your child’s progress. This is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the assessment process.
Thanks for being one of the BEST parts of JIES!

SIC
The JIES School Improvement Council (SIC) is an advisory council to the principal that is focused on school improvement issues. It is made up of representatives of parents, teachers, and community members. The SIC meets at least monthly during the school year.
This year's SIC goals will focus on improving communication and community engagement while continuing efforts to support the STEAM Lab.
The SIC member elections will wrap up during the October meeting; stay tuned for the final results.
Even though there is a SIC Board, the meetings are ALWAYS open to the public. We welcome you to join us!

Wellness Update
October is Self-Care Month at JIES
Every October for the past several years, we have designated October as Self-Care month for our teachers and staff. Self-Care is such an important tool in preventing burnout, and it is something that frequently gets put last on our To-Do lists.
In October, teachers and staff are given weekly Self-Care challenges to help encourage and motivate. These bring Self-Care to the forefront and highlight the importance of caring for oneself in order to best care for our students.
Some weekly challenges in the past have been:
-steps challenge
-water drinking challenge
-self-care checklist challenge
-mindfulness challenge
-fruits and veggies challenge
We have had some wonderful prizes donated in the past by some amazing parents. Yoloha Yoga, Gold's Gym and L'Oreal have been consistent contributors.
Water Drinking Incentives in September
During the month of September, students "caught" drinking water by Nurse Meredith received a special sticker and their name went into a special weekly prize drawing. The weekly winners were announced every Wednesday on the morning news. We had a lot of students committed to drinking water and are SO proud of their dedication to making healthy choices!!
