It's Competition Season for our Career Technical Student Organizations!
FCCLA members shine at the State event!
Earlier this month, FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) members competed in the State Conference and earned some very impressive accolades. Additionally, as a chapter they earned an Outstanding Chapter Award. This award is given to chapters who complete at least five of the seven requirements to help create a well-balanced program of work that makes an impact on their school, community, chapter and state. Only 8 chapters in the state received this award. Congratulations to Mrs. Williams and the FCCLA members!
Below are the medal winners:
- Avery Atkins and Amber Walker earned Silver for their project on Promote and Publicize FCCLA
- Katelyn Reading and Delaney Niven earned Gold, and qualified for Nationals for their project in Sports Nutrition.
- Krista Cook (Milan-SWWC Student) earned gold in Creative Teaching, a Michigan only event
- Enzo Cimaroli (Dexter-SWWC) earned gold in Creative Teaching, a Michigan only event.
- Katie Reading was elected as the First Vice President for the State Executive council for the state of Michigan!!!! We are so excited to have a Saline student represent us at the state level! This is an outstanding accomplishment!
Our SkillsUSA members excelled at their State competition this past weekend!
Our CTSO's (Career Technical Student Organizations) continue to impress! This past weekend, SkillsUSA members from a variety of programs competed in Grand Rapids. Congratulations to all staff and students on an exceptional outcome!
Mr. Trout says: "This is only our second year competing in Additive Manufacturing and I am super happy to say that we took 1st and 3rd place. There were a total of 12 teams that competed this year, teams had to model and 3D print a medallion that represents themselves. Maddie Corn and Hugh Willatt took home the gold and Curtis Krause-Bean (Manchester) and Clark Friese (Milan) the bronze. Please be sure to congratulate these students if you see them! Also wish Maddie and Hugh good luck as they continue on to compete at SkillsUSA Nationals in June."
Mr. Vasiloff says: "Competing in Technical Drafting were Nate Yonak, Abbey Alexander, Jonah Bentley, and Micah Gray, and in Architectural Drafting our competitors were Colton Whalen, Madi Rogan, Devin Vreeland, Reagan Barkel, and Morgan Widman. I am proud to report that we pulled off the perfect sweep for the second year in a row!
There were 17 high school competitors in Technical Drafting again this year, and "Nasty Nate" Yonak won the gold, Abbey Alexander the silver, and Jonah Bentley the bronze! Micah Gray finished 4th place, just 2 points out of a thousand behind Jonah. They had to model a cup holder phone mount and create a set of drawings so one could be manufactured, and it was a really close competition. All of their drawings looked phenomenal!
In Architectural Drafting, Colton Whalen won the gold, Madi Rogan the silver, and Devin Vreeland the bronze, while Reagan Barkel finished 4th and Morgan Widman finished 5th. These students had to design an ADA compliant Chicago "Two Flat" duplex on an existing site, and then produce drawings of their design that included floor plans, elevations, a building section, an interior elevation, schedules, and notes. Their designs and drawings looked amazing, but I think the most impressive part is that all 5 students scored higher on the contest than the college division gold medalist on the same problem.
If you see these students, please be sure to congratulate them on a job well done! Additionally, Nate and Colton will be representing Michigan at SkillsUSA Nationals in Atlanta at the end of June, so wish them luck!"
Ms. Sines says: It was a successful weekend! Everyone did a good job. Community High School student Zoey Cerniglia earned Gold in Cosmetology Mannequin - I'm very proud!
Mr. Rodriguez says: The Graphic Design and Photography programs had another great year of competition and represented both programs and the SWWC well. Riley Malloy earned a Gold medal in the Photography contest and will be heading to SkillsUSA Nationals to compete. Addie Durflinger and Alice Vocal also competed in the Photography contest and did very well.
Brady Nachtrieb and Henry Devaney both competed in the Graphic Communications contest, Brady earned a Gold medal and will compete at the national level this summer.
Leyla Konovalova and Shelby Fordeck competed in the Screen Printing contest and both took medals! Leyla took the Gold, while Shelby took the Silver. Leyla will be joining Brady and Riley at the national contest in Atlanta this June. Avery Piatt, Marco Mathews and Gabby Bolanos all had a good showing in the Advertising Design contest.
Apprenticeship Fair!
The Job Developers Alliance (JDA) is hosting their first Apprenticeship Fair next month on May 1st, 2024. The Fair aims to connect those who are looking for hands-on skills and experience in a trade or profession with local employers. Attendees have the chance to learn more about apprenticeship programs where participants would learn a skill or trade under a professional in the field on the job.
