Feast of Bishop Cheverus
To celebrate the Feast Day of Bishop Cheverus we are focusing our 2022-2023 Annual Fund on January 28, 2023. Throughout his life, Bishop Cheverus was known for his generosity and kindness to others. We ask that you consider making a contribution to the Annual Fund so that Cheverus School may continue to serve the Greater Boston community which Bishop Cheverus so much loved.
During our Catholic Schools week, we will be celebrating Bishop Cheverus as a school community. To join us in honoring Bishop Cheverus, we encourage you to make your contribution by Tuesday January 31, 2023.
Each year our Annual Fund helps us to:
- Address capital projects
- Create scholarships
- Support teacher initiatives
- Improve technology in the classroom
- Introduce extra curricular activities

Fun Facts about Jean-Louis Lefebvre de Cheverus (28 January 1768 – 19 July 1836)
- Cheverus refused to take the oath of the French Revolution.
- Fled to England in 1792. Reverend Francois Antoine Matignon invited him to Boston in 1796.
- He lived among the Indians and mastering their dialect;
- He trudged on foot long distances, attending scattered Catholics.
- He nursed the sick and buried the dead during two yellow-fever epidemics; collected funds and built a church in Boston;
- This disinterested devotion to humble duties gradually won the respect of the prejudiced Puritans.
- Initially he was appointed to Penobscot and Passamaquoddy missions in Maine.
- Built first Cathedral of Holy Cross 1803.
- Consecrated Bishop of Boston in 1810 in Baltimore by Bishop John Carroll.
- Cheverus instrumental in the establishment in 1816 of The Provident Institution for Savings.
- In 1823 King Louis XVIII insisted that Cheverus return to France. Named the Bishop of Montauban, in 1823, while still in Boston.
- Appointed Archbishop of Bordeaux in 1826.
- Elevated to cardinal in February, 1836, in accordance with the wish of King Louis Philippe.
- Cheverus died in Bordeaux in July, 1836, at the age of sixty-eight.
