Let's Take a Look at What's Happening Around AES!
ART
Kindergarten students read Pete's a Pizza, by William Steig. We worked on cutting our various shapes to make our own pizzas.
First graders are learning about Wassily Kandinsky, an artist from Russia. He is famous for paintings of circles and abstract art.
Second graders worked very hard practicing ruler skills, making a quilt border for their projects.
Third graders did the rough draft for their tiles. If your child needs a picture of what they want to do on their tiles, please send one in after vacation.
MUSIC
K: This week the K students were introduced to the Instruments of the Orchestra! We watched a few short videos, looked at pictures of the instruments and played Instrument BINGO!
1st: The 1st graders are working hard learning songs for their big performance and this week we added a new song!
2nd: This week the 2nd graders worked on learning new songs for their big performance in May!
3rd: The 3rd graders continued to work on playing their recorders and reviewing letter B.
Library
All students are having time to work with our Dash and Dot robots. Students in Kindergarten are learning how to use the robots and controlling them with the app called Go. Students in first grade are learning sequencing using the app Path. While students in grades 2 and 3 are using the app Blockley to solve a series of puzzles using basic code.
PE
This week in PE, students are starting with a fun dance warm-up! In grades 2 and 3, they are learning the Cupid Shuffle and exploring ways to modify the dance to make it their own.
After our dance warm-up, students in grades 1-3 are working together with parachutes, building teamwork and coordination before participating in a full-class parachute activity. Kindergarten students are also engaging with the parachute, focusing on whole-group movement and cooperation.
It’s been a great week of movement, music, and collaboration!
Kindergarten
This week Kindergarten students are reading about and discussing what kinds of things grow on a farm. Students read “An Orange in January” written by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by Julie Maren. In this story, an orange blossoms and the story goes through the process of getting the orange to the store to be bought. We learned two new sight words: with & he. In Math, we have begun learning how to count, read, and write numbers 11 - 20. We celebrated the 100th Day of School and we are SO excited to celebrate Valentine’s Day towards the end of the week!
Grade 1
First grade has been learning about the difference between life long ago and today. We are also learning about irregular verbs is and are, and the magic e rule for vowels. In math, we are continuing our place value unit by working with numbers up to 120. In science we are discussing plant survival, and what plants need. We hope everyone has a wonderful vacation!
Grade 2
This week, second graders have been working hard on completing their endangered animals projects! They have compiled their research and are now working on presenting it in a book with nonfiction text features like table of contents, maps, and diagrams. In math, students compared three-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. Second grade students had a special lesson from retired FES teacher, Mrs. Sellars, on Monday and learned more about the Lunar New Year! Have a wonderful vacation!
Grade 3
In Grade 3 we continue to work on reading comprehension strategies. As a team, we meet to discuss what topic students are struggling with. This week we have focused on character perspective/point of view. This is very important to understanding fiction books. We have also been reviewing main idea in both fiction and non-fiction. In math we are wrapping up area and basic word problems.
