A Message from Marcie
Dear Families,
At South Park Elementary, we know that when the adults in a child’s life are supported and cared for, children thrive. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s a meaningful time to reflect on how important it is for parents and caregivers to prioritize their own well-being.
This year, the U.S. Surgeon General called attention to the rising stress levels among parents and caregivers. Parenting can be deeply rewarding, but also overwhelming, exhausting, and emotionally demanding. Please remember: it’s okay to not be okay—and it’s more than okay to ask for help.
Taking care of your own mental health is not selfish—it’s essential. When you care for yourself, you’re better able to care for your child. Whether that means setting boundaries, taking breaks, or seeking support, know that doing so is a sign of strength and love.
If you are in need of local mental health or parenting support resources, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I would be happy to connect you with someone who can help.
Let’s continue to show our children that it’s brave to ask for support, and that they’re growing up in a community that values well-being—for everyone.

Parker's Picks
This week, Parker is reading some great books that teach bigger kids about resilience. Middle grade books (those for students in grades 3-7) are full of stories of kids overcoming challenges and coming out stronger. Here are some great fiction and nonfiction books about kids with grit.
Max in the House of Spies Max is a young Jewish refugee who will do anything to get back to his home in Berlin and search for his parents. To do so, Max must become a British spy. With help from a magical kobold and dybbuk on his shoulders, Max faces each challenge with courage and heart.
In the Tunnel Myung-gi and his family know that war between North Korea and South Korea is inevitable, and they make plans to flee. But when Myung-gi’s father gets arrested, he must do the unthinkable — join the army. On the front lines, Myung-gi must keep hold of his nerves, values, and courage while he searches for his father.
Candle Island After her father dies, Lucretia and her artist mother move to the sparsely populated town of Candle Island, Maine. There, Lucretia meets new friends, discovers new mysteries, and learns to manage her grief. This heartfelt novel from the author of Newberry Honor winner Wolf Hollow is a beautiful story about the healing power of art.
Quiet Riot Who says shy people can’t change the world? This book highlights quiet, soft-spoken, and shy people who reached for the stars and achieved their dreams. From athletes and activists to singers and politicians, readers will learn how quiet people changed the world by being themselves.
Unstoppable Us This fascinating two-book series describes the history of the most resilient creatures on the planet — humans. Written in a conversational tone, the narrative takes readers through the history of humans, how societies were built and maintained, and how they evolved. Kids will learn that people are naturally resilient and will find a way to survive and thrive in almost any condition.
Instrumental Music Information for 3rd Grade Families
Over the past couple weeks, your 3rd grader has had the opportunity to learn all about an exciting opportunity available to them in 4th grade - joining our band and orchestra family! They’ve met with our instrumental music staff and student ambassadors to learn about and hear each instrument available for them to try out and select this spring and will soon see performances from our band and orchestra musicians currently enrolled in the program. We encourage you to talk about this opportunity with your 3rd grader and to check out our instrumental music program website with them to learn more about each instrument and watch past performances from our programs.
All 3rd grade parents and guardians are invited to attend our in-person instrumental music open house on Monday, May 12th at 6:00 PM in the Caruso auditorium. During our open house, you will learn all about our band and orchestra program (which your child will register for this May), watch high school alumni from our program perform on each instrument, and be the first to receive the sign up link to register your child for their instrument fitting. This open house is for adults only as space is limited in the Caruso auditorium. If you are unable to attend, we will share all the information that was covered (including the instrument fitting registration link) via email the following day.
The final (and most exciting!) step of the process is for your child to try out three instruments of their choice at one of our instrument fitting sessions. These will take place after school on May 20th, 21st, and 22nd at Caruso Middle School and the sign up link will be distributed following our May 12th open house.
We hope to see you soon! Please direct any questions you may have to eim@dps109.org and one of our directors will be in touch.
Thank you!

News From Early Learners
This week, our pre-K students have enjoyed using collage in the style of Eric Carle to represent both insects and a wider variety of subject matter. Not only are the students working on their artistic ideation, but they have also been practicing their glue bottle skills. In math, we have been focusing on sequencing numbers through both “cut, count, glue” activities and opportunities to explore our emerging number writing skills. After completing our final “letter of the week” last week, we have been reviewing our alphabet writing. Not only have we been applying both skills in our story writing, but also in creating signs for our concert! Our pre-K students were so proud to sing for their families at our “Taste of Music” Informance. These little chefs shined during their show! Next week, we are looking forward to documenting our caterpillars moving into the chrysalis stage and beginning our ocean unit.
The 3-year-old classes continued to learn about bugs and plants as we observed our bean plants beginning to sprout and our classroom caterpillars grow on their way to building their chrysalises. As the weather has gotten warmer, the students have enjoyed some extra time outside, enjoying the sun and experiencing spring in person. We are looking forward to seeing our caterpillars become butterflies and to beginning our ocean exploration next week.
In Grady's Group, students engaged in a brief age-appropriate discussion on safe touch vs. unsafe touch and how we keep our bodies safe. This is a state requirement and is referred to as Erin's Law. We also read the book Be Careful and Stay Safe by Cheri Meiners.
As we continue to grow, explore, and learn together, we’re so proud of the curiosity, creativity, and confidence our Early Learners show each day. We can’t wait to see what discoveries the coming weeks will bring!
