Programs focus on unique animal traits and adaptations, predator-prey relationships, and general wildlife ecology. Post-program companion activities, publications, and Discovery Trunks are available.

The Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial, or mammal with a pouch, in the United States. Many people fear or dislike opossums due to some common misconceptions and their adaptability to urban environments, but they are actually very interesting animals. You will meet a live Virginia Opossum and explore the unique adaptations that have helped it adapt in its wild habitat and to an urban environment. We will also clear up some public misconceptions and introduce many awesome traits about this animal.

The atmospheric elements that combine to create weather work largely unseen. Weather Wonders uncovers these elements through dynamic demonstrations that examine the conditions necessary to create clouds, precipitation, lightning, thunder, tornadoes, and other weather phenomena.

This presentation is based on the book, Bently & Egg, by William Joyce. Bently Hopperton is a young frog with an artistic temperament. When his friend Kack Kack asks him to watch her egg, disaster happens. So...Bently Hopperton to the rescue! The book will be read together during the class, there will be a discussion about egg decorating, students will do a little problem solving, and then participants will create stick puppets.

LANGUAGE ARTS + MATH + ART
Celebrate the arrival of Spring and learn the traditional art of Pysanky, Ukrainian egg decoration. Students will read Rechenka’s Eggs and discover connections between illustrations by author/artist Patricia Polacco and artworks from the Old Jail Art Center’s Collection. Each student will design his or her own egg in Ukrainian style, using geometric and organic designs. This project will include a review of 2D versus 3D forms as well as the division of shapes into halves and fourths.
