DAVIES HIGH SCHOOL
EAGLES REPORT - FEBRUARY 2025
Honor – Integrity – Pursuit of Excellence
Dear Davies Parents/Guardians,
The school year is flying by quickly and as we move on to the month of February we are finalizing registration of classes for the 2025-26 school year. Currently all 9th - 11th grade students are having conversations with counselors and teachers regarding registration for classes next year. Registration for classes is one of the most important things a high school student does. The decisions on classes selected today plays a large role in their future and future planning for teachers and administration at Davies. If you haven’t already, I strongly encourage all parents and guardians to sit down with your child and talk with them about their choices to ensure they are making the best decisions for their future. Often students have little idea about plans after high school, but it is never too early to start having those conversations. If parents or students have questions about particular classes I encourage them to reach out to a teacher or counselor for help.
Spring Parent Teacher Conferences will again be held only one evening this year. Please note that conferences will be held the evening of February 19 from 4:15-8:15. All conferences this spring will be held inside the main gym. I strongly encourage parents to take advantage of this opportunity and hope the conferences allow everyone who wants to connect with a teacher the ability to do so.
Below you will find a letter with information about a survey Davies High School students will be taking part in. On February 18, a random selection of students will take part in the statewide Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The parent letter gives additional information about the survey. Please take a minute to read the letter and reach out to Assistant Principal Safranski at safrans@fargo.k12.nd.us if you have any questions about the survey.
Go Eagles!!!
Thank you,
- Mr. Safranski

CAREER DAY - FEB. 4
On Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Davies High School is hosting Career Day. This is an exciting opportunity for all students (grades 9-12) to learn about a variety of careers they are interested in. The schedule for that morning includes three 25-minute break out sessions which will run during periods 2 and 3. Every classroom in our building will have a different speaker, and all students selected 3 sessions to attend.
80+ guest speakers will be here to visit with students about their careers and career path.
*With the amount of speakers coming, parking will be limited. A section of the parking lot will be blocked off for our guests. Please encourage your students to carpool or get a ride that day, if possible. There is overflow parking on the East side of the football field that can be used.
EARLY RELEASE DAY - FEB. 14
Fargo Public Schools will release students two hours early from school on February 14 to support the professional development of teachers. The last release days for the school year is March 14.
FPS understands that early release days may cause some inconveniences for parents and guardians. However, this is an important step towards improving our teaching practices and benefiting our students' learning outcomes.
Parents are encouraged to contact the school for more information about the early release days and how they will affect their child's schedule. Students will have the opportunity for both breakfast and lunch on the early release days.
*Busing will run the same schedule, just 2 hours earlier.

Students in Alley Fisher’s Athletic Injuries course practiced how to tape thumbs, wrists, and ankles. Mr. Scott Witte, one of our Sanford Health Athletic Trainers came in to teach the proper techniques and share more about the profession. Mr. Witte has nearly 24 years of experience. He started with Fargo Public Schools in 2003 at South High School and moved to Davies when they first opened in the fall of 2011.
Bomb Presentation
On January 10, members from the Red River Valley Bomb Squad conducted an energetic demonstration for Physics students at Davies High School. This demonstration highlighted specialized tools Bomb Squad technicians utilize to render potential explosive packages safe. The students had to apply the Law of Conservation of Momentum to measure several parameters. The goal is for the students to be able to determine the size of the explosive charge used.
MLK Day Human Rights Award
Congratulations to Davies High School student Florence Sherman on being recognized with a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Human Rights Youth Award by Fargo Human Rights Commission at its annual MLK Day Celebration on January 20! The award recognizes community members whose work exemplifies MLK's legacy and uplifts human rights.
Sherman is President of the North Dakota Association of Student Councils and the North Dakota State Representative for the National Student Council. A Military Ball is a military tradition and is the equivalent of a prom. Cadets get to bring guests, and participate in a night of dancing and fun! As tradition we honored those in, and out of service along with the sacrifices they have made for us in the form of the Prisoner of War/Missing In Action (POW/MIA) table. They also enjoyed a wonderful speech from the Senior Enlisted Leader of the 119th Security Forces Squadron of the North Dakota Air National Guard, Chief Master Sergeant Brandi Growsman. Cadets also had a wonderful time with this year's 1920 Casino theme! The cadets then played cards and ended the night with a silent auction! See more on our Facebook page @AFJROTC Fargo, ND.

NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELOR WEEK
February 3-8, is National School Counseling Week—a time to recognize and honor the tireless work of our incredible counseling team:
Amanda Brown, Anita Mahnke, Ashlyn Skolness, Beth Weiler, and Sarah Nereson.
Far too often, the efforts of our school counselors are underappreciated or quite frankly taken for granted. Their work extends far beyond changing schedules or registering students and new families. They are the heart of our student support system, navigating countless roles that impact the lives of our students, staff, and families every single day.
Our counselors are academic guides, conflict mediators, attendance advocates, and emotional first responders to name just a few. They are champions for mental health, problem solvers in moments of crisis, advocates for equity, and a safe haven for students who need a listening ear. From coordinating 4 year plans and supporting post-secondary planning to assisting with personal challenges and family dynamics, their work is complex, vital, and often unseen.
If you are so inclined, take a moment next week to express your gratitude with a quick little note.
Thank you for helping make this week extra special for these remarkable individuals.

NURSES CORNER
Frostbite
Frostbite can result in the same type of tissue damage as a burn. It can be a serious condition and may require medical attention. Exposure to extreme cold environments, even for a short period of time, can result in hypothermia and frostbite; particularly on fingers, toes, nose and ears.
Frostbitten skin may look discolored, feel cold to the touch and feel numb to the person. Symptoms with deeply frostbitten skin may include skin that looks white or waxy and skin that feels firm or hard.
Treatment of frostbite includes: taking the person to a warm place; removing cold or wet clothing and replacing with warm and dry clothes; protecting the cold skin from further injury. DO NOT rub or massage the cold part or apply heat such as a water bottle, heating pad or hot running water. Cover the skin loosely with a nonstick, sterile dressing or dry blanket. If the skin that looks discolored-grayish, white or waxy, feels firm or hard and has a loss of sensation, further evaluation should be done by a health care provider and possibly may need to call 911.

EAGLE HOUR
What is Eagle Hour: Eagle Hour serves as a dedicated intervention period, where each teacher is available twice a week to provide extra help, offer retake opportunities, clarify difficult concepts, and answer any questions students may have. This time is specifically set aside for academic support and enrichment, giving students the chance to reinforce their learning, stay on track, and improve their performance. These sessions will be voluntary or made mandatory if deemed essential by the teacher for student success.
Why is Eagle Hour Important? If your student is struggling or not achieving the grades they should be, Eagle Hour is the first intervention teachers will suggest. It’s a proactive way to address academic challenges before they become larger issues. By attending Eagle Hour, students can catch up on missed content, strengthen their understanding of key concepts, and receive personalized support from their teachers. Regular participation in Eagle Hour can make a significant difference in a student’s academic progress and overall confidence.
INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION
Fargo Public Schools maintains close communication with local and national weather agencies, local government, and neighboring school districts in order to make decisions regarding inclement weather and other emergency situations that are in the best interest of the safety of our students, staff and parents. The decision to hold classes is based on the general weather conditions which exist for the majority of Fargo students.
Each weather event is looked at individually with multiple sources of information consulted before making the final decision on whether or not to hold school due to inclement weather. The decision to keep schools open or to close them results for weighing factors including excessive snow, temperature or wind chill numbers, wind speeds, road conditions, and the safety of bussing students.
The decision to close school will be made and communicated in as timely of a manner as possible. Closing our schools has a tremendous impact on our parents and community. We strive to make the decision if needed with enough time for parents to make arrangements for supervision of their children. However, at times, a decision the morning of a school day may need to be made to see what weather materializes overnight; if a decision is made in the morning, the decision will be made by 6:00 a.m.
Parents, please keep the following in mind:
If school is in session, and a parent decides that a student should remain at home due to weather conditions, that decision will be respected by the school. Parents should use their own judgment in determining if the weather is suitable for their children to make the journey to school. It is always up to parents to make the final decision about whether or not to send their student to school if they believe weather conditions present a safety issue. The absence for the day would be considered an excused absence.
If school is called off, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up-to-date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School cancellation information will also be broadcasted via local media, and will be posted across our website and social media sites (Facebook, X, and Instagram).
If weather or a situation develops during the day, and it is determined that an early dismissal is in the best interest of the students, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up-to-date contact information.
