November 2021 Newsletter
November is National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month!
America is a vast land of many cultures dating back thousands of years to the original inhabitants of the land. November is a time to celebrate the rich history, heritage, and contributions of the American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage community. You can learn more by clicking here.
Superintendent Yaw Obeng, M.Ed. is happy to announce that a seasoned educator, Kevin Robinson, M.Ed., has joined the Hickman Mills C-1 School District Executive Leadership Team as the new Executive Director of Operations. His first day with the district was on Monday, November 1.
In his position as Executive Director of Operations with HMC-1, Mr. Robinson will oversee the district’s Buildings & Grounds Department, Nutrition Service Department, security, athletics and bond work. Please join us in welcoming Mr. Robinson. You can learn more about him here.
Legacy Foundation Check Celebration
HMC-1 recently received a $12,500 grant award from the Legacy Foundation to support student health services.
The district has been a recipient of the Legacy Grant for Student Health for five consecutive years, receiving a total of $68,750 dollars from the Baptist-Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation
(BTLLF). The funds have allowed HMC-1 to purchase medical supplies to support students with asthma, vision screening equipment, Signs of Suicide Training for staff and 5 - 12 grade students, and staff training in Youth Mental Health First Aid and Trauma Smart.
We are beyond grateful for this continuous partnership. These funds have been essential to the district’s continuous social-emotional support to students.
Celebrating World Kindness Day
World Kindness Day was recognized on November 13, and HMC-1’s students and staff members celebrated by helping everyone remember that compassion for others is what binds us all together.
World Kindness Day is a global day that promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself, and to the world. Don’t forget - kindness is contagious, so spread it everywhere you go!

Above & Beyond Honoree, First Grade Millennium Student
Congratulations to our first Above and Beyond Award recipient for the 2021-22 school year, Peyton J., first grade student at Millennium at Santa Fe.
Peyton is a leader inside and outside of the classroom. He continuously looks out for his peers, ensuring they feel comfortable and safe. One day at recess, there was a crowd of students trying to go down the slide. There was a student that was getting frustrated because other students kept jumping in front of her. Peyton was able to calm the student down while helping the student get her turn down the slide. Not only is Peyton a student with good character, he is also a top scholar. He is one of the highest in first grade for reading and math. He always demonstrates appropriate behavior and is a great role model for his peers. Thank you, Peyton, for being such a fantastic scholar!
November Applause Applause Honorees
Congratulations to our November Applause Applause honorees!
This month we are recognizing students at two different schools, Smith-Hale Middle School and Burke Academy.
Smith-Hale sixth grader Thomas V., seventh grader Kyliq R., and eighth grader Da Veon T. are being recognized for having the most Reading i-Ready Lessons completed with 100% accuracy. Smith-Hale sixth grader Nikolas H., seventh grader Kee Veion R., and eighth grader Muquadis K. are being recognized for having the most Math i-Ready Lessons completed with 100% accuracy.
Burke Academy student Axel J. entered Missouri Options this Summer without enough credits to classify him as a Sophomore. He completed all his required classes and passed all five HiSet exams in July. Axel came into Summer School behind with Sophomore credits, and because of his hard work and dedication he is Burke’s first senior graduate for the Class of 2022.
Burke Academy student Kidrick P, like many Gifted and Talented students, lost interest in school and fell behind academically his Sophomore year. He became determined to complete school and excel academically and he did just that, completing all requirements for graduation within a month of school.
Burke Academy student Clarence B. clearly represents our Children of Promise. He left high school in the 10th grade with nine high school credits. He returned to school after a one-year absence, completing 35 classes to meet all requirements for this year's graduation. He went from a credit recovery student to a soon-to-be Class of 2022 student.
Thank You to Our Community Members!
The Hickman Mills C-1 School District would like to thank our community members who donated to the district, following the news that the district lost its main food vendor due to ongoing national supply chain issues. Our hearts are full of gratitude as we report that our food warehouse is full and the district is now receiving consistent deliveries from Martin Bros. This could not have been possible without the dedication and outpouring of support from friends, family, staff, the Hickman Mills community, and the Greater Kansas City community. Read more here.
November is National Homelessness Youth Awareness Month!
Every year, hundreds of thousands of American families become homeless, including more than 1.6 million children. Those who experience homelessness not only lose their home, they lose their community, friends, and routines as well as their sense of stability and safety.
At HMC-1, we seek to support all those who are experiencing homelessness through our McKinney-Vento program. Contact your Family School Liaison if you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness.
Building & Grounds Recognitions
Congratulations to members of the district’s Building & Grounds Department for being recognized for their work and always going above and beyond when it comes to their job.
