Medical Detectives
Medical Detectives is a semester-long STEAM and Project Lead the Way elective in which students will develop skills that enable them to play the role of real-life medical detectives as they work to solve medical mysteries. Students will learn to collect and analyze medical data, diagnose disease, and understand the role that different body systems play in understanding illness. They will engage in problem/project based learning through hands-on and interactive units to not only learn about the medical world, but also gain real life skills and experience in it. Throughout Medical Detectives, students will utilize a variety of digital tools as well, such as the use of interactive simulations and creating stop motion videos. Hands-on activities will include dissection, creating models, conducting antibiotic analysis, and much more. Students will learn about disease agents and their impact on the human body and do an in depth study of the nervous system to understand and diagnose neurological disease. Students will use their acquired skills and understanding of experimental design to analyze "patient" medical files to determine cause of illness, identify and prescribe treatment methods, create informational resources, and solve a disease outbreak mystery!
