The Little Drummer Boy in All of Us
"This God made the world and everything in it. He is Lord of heaven and earth, and he doesn't live in temples built by human hands. He doesn't need help from anyone. He gives life, breath, and everything else to all people." (Acts 17:24–25)
The Christmas story is filled with familiar faces: shepherds keeping watch by night, magi traveling from the east, an innkeeper who had no room, and even King Herod with his cruel decree. But over the years, a new figure has found his way into our imaginations—the little drummer boy.
Though not part of the biblical story, the little drummer boy, introduced in the popular song first recorded in 1955, captures something deeply true about our experience of faith.
The song tells a simple story. The magi invite a young drummer to join them on their journey to see the newborn King. When they arrive, the boy realizes he has nothing worthy to offer. He’s poor and empty-handed—except for his drum. So, he asks, “Shall I play for you?” Mary nods, and the boy plays his best. And in the end, the baby Jesus smiles.
It’s a humble picture, but it rings true. The little drummer boy reminds us of something we all know deep down: when we stand before God, we come with empty hands. We see the majesty of Jesus, and we realize just how inadequate we are.
We’ve all been the little drummer boy. We’ve all felt the weight of our own shortcomings, wondering what we could possibly offer to the King of Kings. But here’s the good news: Jesus doesn’t ask us for riches or perfection. He invites us to bring whatever we have, even if it feels small and unworthy.
When we offer him our “drum”—our talents, our time, our love—he welcomes it. He doesn’t need anything from us, but he desires all of us. And when we give our best, no matter how humble, he receives it with joy.
So, as we end our journey through this season of Advent, let’s remember that Jesus isn’t looking for grandeur or perfection. He’s looking for hearts that are willing to offer what they have, trusting that even our simplest gifts can bring him joy.
All I have is this drum.
It starts this way for all of us, you see. I was that little drummer boy, and so were you. Before we can be the magi inviting others to come along, we’re the ones who feel completely inadequate, and in one sense, we always will. If we would see Jesus, and understand his significance, we can’t help but sense our own frailty. All we have is this drum. What in the world could ever be enough for this King? We’ve just got this drum, so we ask, do you want that? Do you want this stupid drum? And he says, Yes, bring your nothing, play the drum.
And so we play it for him, and we play our best for him, declaring that we are small, that we are weak, that he doesn’t need us in the least, but that with all that we are, with every little speck of nothing we have, we are giving it to him. To him.
We know that this King has no lack, that he doesn’t need anything, but that we, because of him, are absolutely, completely, wonderfully his. Me and my drum—all his.
Finding Joy in the Small Moments of Christmas
As Christmas draws near, our days can feel a little hectic. The final preparations—the decorating, the baking, the wrapping—sometimes seem to blur together. Even the familiar routines we cherish might feel a little rushed as we try to get everything done before December 25.
But in these busy days, even the small things can carry meaning: a favorite Christmas carol playing on the radio, the glow of a candle in a quiet room, a neighbor’s cheerful wave as they pass by. These little moments might not seem like much, but they have the power to lift our spirits and bring us joy—a kind of joy that we might not even realize we needed.
This time of year, joy often shows up in surprising ways. Maybe it’s reconnecting with someone you haven’t seen in a while, finding the perfect gift for someone you love, or simply pausing to take in the beauty of a quiet winter evening. Sometimes, joy comes in the simplest of acts: a shared meal with family, laughter with friends, or a moment of peace while watching the snow fall outside your window. And it’s okay to celebrate those moments of joy, no matter how big or small they may seem. God often meets us in those quiet, ordinary spaces.
Of course, for many, this season can also bring feelings of loss or longing. Routines change, loved ones may no longer be present, and familiar spaces don’t always feel the same. We carry those feelings with us, too, and that’s alright. The beauty of Christmas is that it meets us where we are, in the midst of our joy and our grief, with the promise of hope. As we turn toward Christmas Eve, we are reminded of a deeper truth: no matter what has changed or what might feel uncertain, Christmas is coming. Christ is born.
Nothing can stop the promise of Christmas. It is a promise that holds us, renews us, and gives us hope. A promise that God is with us—in our joy, in our grief, and in every ordinary moment in between. That is the miracle of Emmanuel, God with us.
I hope you will join us for our Christmas Eve service on Tuesday, December 24, at 6PM. Together, we will celebrate the birth of Christ, the light that shines in the darkness and cannot be overcome. In this gathering, we are reminded that the joy and hope of Christmas are not just for one night, but for every day. When we come together in worship, we share in the deeper meaning of this season—God's presence with us, offering light, love, and renewal to all who seek it. It is always one of my favorite nights of the year, and I look forward to sharing it with you as we sing, pray, and reflect together.
As I close this note, I want to take a moment to say how much I enjoy writing these weekly notes of encouragement. It has been a joy to share thoughts, prayers, and reflections with you throughout the year. Even more than that, I am deeply thankful for each of you who take the time to read these words. Your faithfulness, even in the small moments, inspires me every week. I pray that, in some small way, these e-notes have helped you take steps in your faith journey, one day at a time. Know that God is walking with you, just as God has been walking with us through this season of Advent.
I will be praying for each of you in these coming days—for a Merry Christmas filled with joy and peace, for strength and grace in the year ahead, and for hearts that remain open to God’s presence in every moment.
See you in church!

Bible Reading—Luke 2:1-14
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place in the guest room. Now in that same region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for see, I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”
First Sunday After Christmas—December 29, 10:30AM (NO 8:15 chapel service)
Epiphany Sermon Preview—“Why the Magi Matter” (Sun, January 5)
The magi’s journey is more than a familiar Christmas story—it reveals God’s expansive love. These outsiders, guided by a star, recognized the holiness of Jesus and offered their gifts. On Sunday, January 5, as we observe Epiphany, we’ll reflect on what their story teaches us about welcoming others and making room for all in God’s kingdom. Join us as we reflect on why the magi matter and what their story says about welcoming others in the name of Christ.
Two Sacrament Sunday—Jan 12 (8:15A Chapel, 10:30A Sanctuary, & Online)
On Baptism of the Lord Sunday, we will remember the baptism of Jesus and reflect on our own baptisms, seeking God’s renewal for 2025. We will also celebrate Holy Communion, sharing bread and cup in remembrance of Christ. If you’ve never been baptized or are interested, please contact Pastor Adam at 724-893-6244.

Property Committee—Elevator Update
On Sunday, December 8, our church elevator experienced a brief malfunction as folks were heading to the fellowship hall for our Advent luncheon. Thankfully, no one was inside at the time, and the issue was promptly resolved the following day. We’d like to remind everyone that there are clear instructions posted inside the elevator to follow in the rare event of a malfunction. As an added precaution, the property committee kindly recommends riding the elevator with a partner whenever possible. We are grateful for your understanding and for the opportunity to keep our church safe and welcoming for all.
