Franklin 411
Issue #6 - October 6, 2024
A Word From Mrs. Loor
Last Monday, Mrs. Mills taught about various harvest festivals such as Chuseok from Korea, Mooncake festival from China, Sukkot from the Jewish faith and Pongul from the Hindu faith. We learned about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as well! For those of you who celebrate, I wish you an easy fast and a Good Yuntif.
This week, we are celebrating the Week of Respect. Monday is World Day of Bully Prevention. We are wearing blue to remind us that kindness matters! Students will be chalking the walkways with words and phrases of respect. Quotes about respect will be shared throughout the week and we will have a school-wide virtual read aloud with Ms. Audino.
Please be on the look out for my letter regarding Halloween in next week's 411.
Have a marvelous week!
With Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Loor
Strategic Planning
The District is hosting a strategic planning general session on Wednesday, October 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Summit High School cafeteria. All stakeholders (students in grades 4-12, parents, teachers, staff, and Summit community members) are invited and encouraged to attend. The QR code below will take you to the Strategic Plan website.
While walk-ins are welcome, we would appreciate if you would let us know if you plan on attending the general session on October 16, by completing the RSVP form below.
On the Same Page: Library News from Mrs. Mills
We would like to introduce a new library program that will help us continue to grow our collection with up-to-date favorites. “Celebration Books!” is an opportunity for families to dedicate books to the library in recognition of a special event (graduation, moving up, birthday) or “just because,” in honor of their child. Please read the linked letter, or reach out to us for more information.
Throughout the year, Mrs. Mills will be leading presentations on holidays that are important to Franklin families. This year, we will present Diwali, Winter Holidays (Hanukkah/Christmas/Kwanzaa), MLK Day, Ramadan, and Passover/Easter. We would like to invite families that celebrate these special days to participate in our events. If you are interested and would like more information, please contact Mrs. Mills (jmills@summit.k12.nj.us).
And finally, thank you again for all your generous donations for the Butterfly Boxes for the Brooke Healey Foundation.

TEAM UP FOR HEALTHY EATING!
Did you know that Franklin Elementary School is a USDA Team Nutrition School? As a “team,” Franklin School is working towards healthier school nutrition and snacking.
Team Franklin needs your help! Please be mindful of the student snack choices that are sent in on a daily basis. Many students are bringing candy and other unhealthy snacks to be consumed both in the classroom and lunchroom.
Snacks that are high in sugar and fat, and those with empty calories such as candy, cookies, gushers, chips and sugary drinks etc…, are all foods of minimal nutritional value and are not in keeping with our District Nutrition Policy #8505.
In addition, many candies contain nuts, or are processed in a plant with nuts, and may put students with nut allergies at risk for exposure.
Fruits and vegetables, low fat yogurts and cheeses, hummus, popcorn, low sugar snack bars, and whole grain crackers are great alternatives and help establish healthy eating habits.
Never hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns!
Kind regards,
Ann Zanelli
