OMS The Middle Matters

Inspiring Excellence. Every Learner. Every day.
Hello OMS,
Please read below for information about our upcoming SOAR schedule and Homecoming events.
Thank you!
SOAR
Starting October 2 we will begin running an alternate schedule every Wednesday for SOAR.
What is SOAR?
SOAR stands for Skills, Organization, Accountability and Responsibility. It is a dedicated class period once a week to help students with academic skills, organize their work, get homework/project help from teachers, have a new skill retaught, or make up any tests/quizzes they may have missed.
When will this happen?
OMS will have an alternate schedule every Wednesday. In place of Husky Connections, we will hold SOAR from 9:04-9:56am. This means the rest of our class periods are a bit shorter. You can look closer at the schedule below.
Why are we having a SOAR class period?
At OMS we are working on getting all of our students reading and doing math at grade level. That means we have to dedicate time for extra practice with these skills. Based on data gathered from parents and students, we have many students who would benefit from extra support with reading and math, getting their assignments organized and turned in on time, and an extra opportunity to work on bigger projects or assignments when they are busy with after school activities. Taking time to do all of these things is important and that is why we will run a special schedule on Wednesdays.
Wait! This is different than how SOAR used to be!
It sure is, and it will be a bit of an adjustment for our 7th and 8th graders. Previously, SOAR was held every other week and students chose from a variety of enrichment activities. SOAR was then more of a built in choice time and a lot of students who really needed the reading and math help either missed out that help or missed out on doing fun things with their friends during this time. With this change, we will all work on academics each Wednesday and every quarter students will have a chance to do a choice activity during SOAR. Students who need the extra support to improve their reading and math skills will benefit from this time. Students who have good skills in academics will benefit from additional practice or enrichment in these areas. Everyone will benefit from working with their teachers to get organized and have time to catch up on things they might have missed. When it's time for a CHOICE SOAR, all students get to participate and no one has to miss out.
How will it work?
During our regular SOAR class periods, students will be assigned to a classroom on their Team or to an elective teacher who is working with their Team. Each week we will rotate the academic focus so all of our core classes and electives have the opportunity to hold reteaching and retesting sessions. Students will see their homebase SOAR classroom on Infinite Campus. When we have a CHOICE SOAR, students will sign up for their preferred activity (which could be anything fun from basketball to friendship bracelets) using Infinite Campus.
SOAR Schedule Every Wednesday Starting October 2
Homecoming Week
OHS Homecoming is the week of September 30-October 4.
On October 4 we will run a 2 hour Early Release schedule. OMS students will be dismissed from school at 12:20pm so that all can attend or participate in the Homecoming Parade. Please be aware of this change in schedule for next Friday. Buses will run their normal routes, just 2 hours early. Parent pick up will be at 12:20pm.
