RI Mock Caldecott and Mock Newbery Award Winners

On Monday, January 9, children's librarians and school librarians gathered to vote for the year's most distinguished picture book. With over 38 books under consideration, it was a tough call that required a second round voting.

2017 Youth Media Awards

Can't be in Atlanta on January 23rd? Watch the awards live (perhaps in your pajamas with a cup of hot cocoa) at http://ala.unikron.com/2017.
On Wednesday, January 18, 17 librarians needed only one round of voting to select a winner and two honor books. Participants read and discussed a total of 29 books before voting.

These results have been added to ALSC's list of mock election results.


The 2017 Youth Media Award announcements will take place on Monday, Jan. 23, 2017 at 8 a.m. ET from the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits in Atlanta.

There are two ways to watch this year. The awards will be live streamed from the I Love Libraries Facebook page and available with real-time close captioning at http://ala.unikron.com/2017.

Providence Children's Film Festival

The Providence Children's Film Festival returns for its 8th year on February 17th through February 26th. You should have received a Providence Children's Film Festival packet last week at the performers' showcase or through delivery. Please let me know if you have not received it. Labels for the PCFF films on DVD/Blu-ray in your collection are still available and can be sent through delivery.

Financial Literacy @ Your Library Showcase

The goal of this event is to provide an opportunity for community financial partners (librarians, organizations, government agencies, etc.) to showcase financial literacy programs and/or information available to libraries across RI during Money Smart Week 2017 (April 22-29) and year-round. The Financial Literacy Showcase will feature simultaneous tabletop presentations (poster or multimedia), which allows attendees to explore the showcase, ask questions of presenters and network with librarians and community partners at their own pace.


Some of your fellow librarians will be on hand to present Financial Literacy programs aimed at kids and teens. Babs Wells from Greenville has done some wonderful programming for kids and families and will share what she has done and what you can replicate at your library. Chris Wallace Goldstein will share what Woonsocket has done for teen programming, at no cost. Michelle Novello of the Providence Community Libraries will talk about their wide variety of programming for kids, teens and adults.

This program is open to all librarians and staff who run a summer reading program.

Ready to change up your Summer Reading Program? We’ll take a look at the latest research on summer learning programs and how your program can maximize impact.


We’ll discuss:

  • Organizing your program. The who, what, and how of tracking reading, and the prize dilemma.
  • Planning with intention. Summer reading programs strive to stem summer learning loss, but what does your summer reading program aspire to achieve?
  • Inclusion. Developing a summer reading program for all abilities.
  • Evaluating your program. Examining what worked, how you met your goals, and how to demonstrate your success to library stakeholders.


Please bring an example of a component of your summer reading program that works very well for your community and an example of a component of your summer reading program that you would like to improve upon.

The Rhode Island Library Association's Financial Literacy Round Table (FLRT) is kicking off the new year by hosting a financial literacy resource fair - "Financial Literacy @ Your Library Showcase." The goal of this event is to provide an opportunity for community financial partners (librarians, organizations, government agencies, etc.) to showcase financial literacy programs and/or information available to libraries across RI during Money Smart Week 2017 (April 22-29) and year-round.


The Financial Literacy @ Your Library Showcase will feature simultaneous tabletop presentations (poster or multimedia), allowing attendees to explore the showcase, ask questions of presenters and network with library colleagues and community partners at their own pace. (Think speed dating meets library programming).

Stop by any time between 10 a.m. and noon to network with financial professionals and library colleagues to plan your financial literacy programs.


Refreshments will be served.
