Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
March is developmental disabilities awareness month and we want to Spread the Word for Inclusion.
Inclusion refers to the practice of making sure everyone, regardless of their differences, feels valued, respected, and has equal access to opportunities. In an inclusive environment, all individuals are encouraged to participate and contribute without facing discrimination or bias.
Discussing inclusion with your children is important for several reasons:
Promotes Empathy and Respect: Talking about inclusion helps children develop empathy and respect for others. Understanding that people have different backgrounds, abilities, and experiences fosters compassion and kindness.
Encourages Positive Social Interaction: When children understand the importance of inclusion, they are more likely to interact with peers who might be different from themselves. This creates a more harmonious social environment and helps children build diverse friendships.
Fosters Confidence in Every Child: Inclusion ensures that all children, regardless of their differences, feel valued and important. When children see that everyone has a place, they feel more confident and are encouraged to be themselves.
Encourages Collaboration and Teamwork: Inclusion teaches children to work together with others who may have different skills or perspectives. This builds teamwork and communication skills that will benefit them later in life.
By discussing inclusion, you help children learn to value diversity, treat others with kindness, and become responsible, open-minded citizens of the world.
