KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Northwood was fortunate to have had a school visit from our Fulton County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Mike Looney, this morning. He visited many classrooms and connected with staff and students. He was complimentary of all he saw, and he knows he’s welcome to come by anytime. He enjoyed reading a story to one of our kindergarten classrooms for Apple Day.
I know your weather apps and websites have been as frequently visited as mine. Once the storm passes, we’ll be on campus to assess inside and outside to make sure everything is ready to go again on Monday. I hope everyone stays safe and weathers this storm safely.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
Principal
SECOND GRADE EXPLORERS
Second grade has been working hard on writing expository paragraphs! Students spent several days researching a famous/historical figure and have been hard at work transforming their research into a well-developed paragraph. Some of the biographies that students read include the Wright brothers, Eric Carle, and Simone Biles! Students have been excited to share their research and paragraphs with their peers and teachers. We are so proud of their hard work!
THIRD GRADE EXPLORERS
Our third grade students are working hard during Small Group Reading time. While some students directly work with teachers who are introducing a new skill, other students are working in small groups to practice. The teachers love the opportunity to adjust lessons to give all students what they need to feel successful. The students love the opportunity to be successful and conference about their own learning!
Grades 1, 3, and 5, please click the link below to read the Vision and Hearing Parent Letter. Thanks!
GEORGIA READS DAY
On Monday, September 30th, Northwood will participate in Georgia Reads Day! To kick off this special day, Mrs. Rucker will host a fall-themed read aloud on Teams. Each homeroom teacher has also received a copy of Malcolm Mitchell’s book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, to add to their classroom library. In addition, teachers will have the option to tune in and listen to Malcolm Mitchell read his book live at 10 a.m.—a special treat for our students!
If you would like to join in the celebration at home, please visit the Georgia Reads website for more information. Let's celebrate the joy of reading together!
NORTHWOOD HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
During the month of October, Northwood 1st-5th grade students will participate in the Fit Georgia physical fitness assessment in Health and Physical Education class. Fit Georgia is a state-developed fitness assessment designed to measure various aspects of physical health, including Healthy Body Ranges, Aerobic Capacity, Flexibility, Muscular Strength, and Muscular Endurance. The assessment was created to meet Georgia standards and replaces the previous fitness assessment platform. The following assessments will be used to measure the various areas of physical health: 15m PACER (aerobic capacity), Push-Up (upper body strength and endurance), Curl-Up (abdominal strength and endurance), Back-Saver Sit and Reach (flexibility), and height/weight (healthy body). For information regarding the Fit Georgia assessment, please visit https://fitgeorgia.gadoe.org/About/.

The school day ends at 2:20 p.m. Please avoid early checkouts as instruction goes on until 2:15 p.m., however, if your child must be checked out early, please do so before 2:00 p.m. After 2:00 p.m., students will be sent using normal dismissal procedures so as not to interfere with the school-wide dismissal process. We appreciate your cooperation and consideration.
