Nighthawk Families,
NC will experience a partial eclipse on Monday, April 08, 2024 beginning at 1:58 and peaking at approximately 3:15. Herbert Akins Rd MS will not be taking students outside to observe this event due to safety reasons surrounding looking directly at the sun. We have encouraged all teachers that if they would like to participate in observing this natural phenomenon that they do so through the live streaming broadcast from NASA. Families who would like for their student to observe the partial eclipse from outside are more than welcome to pick their student up and take them home to view this event.
We appreciate your understanding and partnership in reminding your student to not look directly at the sun during dismissal. Everyone's safety is of the utmost importance to us.
Please follow us on our school's Facebook page, X "Twitter" account, and Instagram to stay abreast of up-to-date news and reminders throughout each school week. Scroll all the way to the end of this newsletter and click on the buttons to follow us on each platform!
We enjoyed hosting some of our rising 6th Grade Nighthawks for their Orientation this past Thursday, March 28th. We have another session on April 9th from 6:30-7:30. Please share with friends and neighbors if they will have a 6th grader at Herbert Akins Rd MS next year.
We hope to have you join us for our Spring Athletic Events! You can find the link to the schedule below.
Tracks 1, 2, and 3 were given their Quarter 3 report cards on Friday. Please take a few minutes to review it with your student.
Our school's goal is to improve daily attendance during the 4th quarter, and it will require all of us to #StickTogether to have at least an average of 95% of students in attendance daily. We understand students have appointments but appreciate families scheduling them after 3:00 PM or on track out days. In addition, we encourage families to take vacations during track outs. Here are the 2023-24 school calendar and the 2024-25 school calendar for your planning purposes.
With appreciation for your support and partnership as we continue to #buildournest in Year 2,
Anne Marie Adkins
Principal

Positivity Project at Herbert Akins Rd MS
Supporting Others When They Struggle
Dear Families,
This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.
Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.
To practice and encourage the character strength of perspective with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.
Have a wonderful week!
Rising FVHS 9th Graders and Families - 3 Year Graduation Option
North Carolina House Bill 259 requires us to notify our current enrolled 9th and 10th grade students of the opportunity to graduate from high school after their third year. This legislation allows students to apply to be a 3-Year Graduate. Eligible students are only able to apply for this flexibility if they meet the state’s minimum graduation requirements.
We value the high school experience and believe that high school provides students with an opportunity to expand their academic pursuits and interests. However, we also realize that this opportunity may be of interest to some of our families.
We will hold a virtual meeting for interested students and families on
Thursday, April 11th at 6 pm.
During this meeting, we will review all available information and provide an opportunity for questions through a Q&A document on the video link.
