Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Over the last several weeks, we have seen great progress in COVID metrics declining!
This week our district announced the first phase in reopening our campuses by bringing back all employees to their worksites. We are beginning our re-entry phase with all employees returning to schools and district facilities on Monday, March 15, 2021—this is the Monday after spring break.
On Monday, March 15 and Tuesday, March 16 our students will participate in asynchronous learning while teachers and staff prepare their classrooms, technology, and work stations. On March 17th teachers will resume teaching students remotely, from their classrooms; students will return to their distance learning schedules and will remain online until the Governing Board approves the date for students to return to our hybrid learning model. We will communicate with you as additional plans and phases are announced.
Our Governing Board is having a work/study session on March 17 to discuss the outlook and options for an in-person return for students. We will communicate those outcomes as soon as they become available.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

To Parents of 3rd through 8th Grade Students:
Each year, our 3rd through 8th-grade students take the Arizona statewide achievement test called AzM2 (formerly named AzMERIT). Last spring, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the state-wide assessment was canceled. This year we are required to administer the AzM2 test in order to be in compliance with state and federal requirements. Students are assessed in three areas: Writing, ELA, and Mathematics.
The AzM2 must be taken in-person at the school. The testing window opens April 5 and we anticipate finishing all grades by May 7. We are planning for students to be on campus for three days of testing for each subject area, with additional days available for students that may need additional time. Students that are routed for transportation may take the bus to and from school and we will be contacting individual families regarding this arrangement. Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the school and district. The number of students testing per day will be limited in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
Please stay tuned for more information regarding Shaw Montessori safety procedures, schedules, and additional details coming following our Spring Break. We appreciate your partnership as parents and caregivers and will work with you to make this as safe and smooth as possible. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our school test coordinator, Jennifer Collier jennifer.collier@phxschools.org or Principal Susan Engdall susan.engdall@phxschools.org

Spring is here!!
The weather is gorgeous and spring break is around the corner. Here are some fun family activities you can consider.
Arizona Railway Museum
Outdoor, self-guided. Kids $2
Go Fishing
Spend a few hours outdoors with your children and introduce them to fishing—especially in the spring. Urban lakes throughout the Phoenix area contain stocked bass, catfish, trout, and other species, managed through a partnership between the state Game and Fish Department and the local parks and recreation departments known as the Arizona Community Fishing Program.
www.azgfd.com/fishing/community
Fishing for children under age 18 is FREE.
Go on a Safari
You don't have to hop on a plane to the Serengeti to go on a safari; in fact, you can find a safari right in Glendale.
Cabela's in Glendale maintains is a museum-worthy educational display with more than 400 animals. Signs provide context about the lifelike creatures, from a tiny mouse to a huge elephant. A tank contains live fish native to Arizona, including the state fish and several endangered species.
Take a Hike
If you want to show your kids real petroglyphs up close and personal, take an easy hike at Waterfall Trail in the White Tank Mountains northwest of Phoenix for a living history lesson. About midway to the turning point of the two-mile round-trip journey, you reach Petroglyph Plaza, the best spot in the Phoenix valley to see Hohokam Petroglyphs.
Ride Bikes Load the mountain bikes onto a rack and drive to a beautiful nearby park, such as South Mountain, to go for a family bike ride.

Shaw Montessori 2021/2022 Enrollment
Text Message Clarification:
A text message was sent out on Wednesday Feb. 24 that was intended for families with a PS2 student to notify them that they did not need to attend a Kindergarten enrollment event in our parking lot that evening. Current PS2 children hold Kindergarten spots on our campus for the next school year. (We plan for all families to re-join us school year after school year unless we are notified otherwise)
2 days later, on Friday Feb. 26 a message was sent to remind all families that the annual Open Enrollment form that is required for all Shaw students is due by Monday, March 1, 2021.
We apologize for any confusion the 2 messages caused and we hope you find this explanation helpful.
If you have not turned in an open enrollment form, please do so.
Thank you!
For any questions, please call the Shaw office.
