TOGETHER WE LIGHT THE WAY
A NOTE FROM DR HITCHMAN
As we move into the last full month of the school year, there are many events and activities which will be occurring over the course of the next 22 school days in May. Beginning on Monday, May 6, our students will begin taking end-of-year exams in their AP classes. The schedule for AP exams is set by the College Board and students who are taking AP classes are expected to take the exam on the specified date and time. Students in certain math, science, and English classes will be taking the state standards of learning (SOL) exam on Tuesday, May 14 & Wednesday, May 15. While we will be running a different bell schedule on May 14 & 15, the majority of Lightridge students will not be taking an AP or SOL exam and are expected to be in their classes. In looking at 3 year trend data, we tend to see a dip in student attendance during the month of May. We encourage students to arrive to class on time with what they need to be successful and ready to learn. As a friendly reminder, there is no 50% floor during the 4th marking period per the LCPS Grading and Assessment Policy. Showing up is the first step towards success and we look forward to seeing our students close out the school year on a positive note.
If you have visited Lightridge recently during the school day you may have noticed an increase in cars parked in the front and stadium parking lot. We’ve noticed a lot more student drivers during the past month and students are expected to request a parking permit, which they can receive at no charge from one of our SSO’s who are available during each lunch block. Unfortunately with more student drivers, we have also noticed an increase in students speeding on campus and on Lightridge Farm Road. The LCSO is also aware of the unsafe driving practices and have issued citations to students for traffic violations. If you have a student driver, please speak with them about obeying posted speed limits, stopping at all stop signs, and not passing cars on a double yellow line. Unfortunately every spring we hear reports of students being involved in serious accidents. We definitely do not want that to occur to any of our students and we appreciate your partnership as we attempt to keep our students safe behind the wheel.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone that May 6 - 10 is Teacher Appreciation Week. While the Lightridge Administration, PTSO, and Athletic Booster Club have activities planned for our amazing staff, I would like to encourage our students and parents to take a moment and recognize the hard work, dedication, and perseverance exhibited by our teachers. I am fortunate to witness the inspiring instruction and interpersonal interactions which occur in our classrooms on a daily basis. I would like to thank our staff for choosing to make a difference at Lightridge for our 1930 students. Thank you for taking the time to read our May newsletter and together we light the way!
