2. MCH Students Supporting State Title V Efforts
Congratulations to first year MCH student and Center Research Assistant Emily Reimer, who was accepted into the Title V Internship Program! Each summer, the National MCH Workforce Development Center supports teams of MCH students to participate in internships in state Title V programs. Each two-person team consists of a graduate MCH student from a Center of Excellence in MCH Maternal, and an MCH student from either an MCH undergraduate Pipeline program or from an MCH graduate public health Catalyst program. Emily will be working right here with the Minnesota Department of Health’s (MDH) Title V program staff. Congrats, Emily!

4. Week of the Young Child (April 11-17, 2020): Supporting Minneapolis Children and their Families During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Did you know that the Center is a part of the Minnesota Vision Health Task Force? The Minnesota team is one of eight selected to participate in a Better Vision Together- Community of Practice, which is convened by the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness (NCCVEH). The goal of this two-year project is to improve vision and eye health in the at-risk, minority, and vulnerable populations of young children.
In this month’s Task Force Member Spotlight Deby Ziesmer, a Fellow at the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board (YCB), discusses how to support Minneapolis children and their families, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
5. National MCH Trainee Blog Post: Competency 12–Policy
Marieh Scales (Emory University) details the history of reproductive justice and abortion access in Georgia, as well as her work as a graduate research assistant on the Georgia Access to Medication Abortion project. Her initial results show that Georgian residents, and specifically Black and Latinx women, are often confused about abortion policy changes and many think that legal abortion is no longer available in Georgia. This work highlights how policy change and complicated processes can create barriers to healthcare access.
Research
6. Pregnancy, Birth, and Infant Outcomes Among Women Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
This retrospective cohort study compared pregnancy outcomes, birth characteristics, and neonatal outcomes of deaf and hard of hearing individuals to a non-deaf and hard of hearing control group. The results show that deaf and hard of hearing women are at an increased risk for a myriad of pregnancy and birth complications including: higher rates of diabetes (pre-existing and gestational), pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, low birth weight, and preterm birth.
7. A Novel Approach to Postpartum Contraception Provision Combined with Infant Care: A Randomized, Controlled Trial
Using a randomized control trial, this study evaluated whether postpartum contraceptive services at well baby visits increased the rates of long acting reversible contraception (LARC) use and ultimately decreased short interpregnancy intervals. Although 73% of the intervention group liked the access to contraceptive services a lot, there was not a significant uptake of LARCs by the intervention group in comparison to the control group.
