Celebrating Excellence at Tilden: A Community of Achievement
Dear Tilden Families,
Spring at Tilden brings a flurry of achievements that showcase our community's dedication to excellence across all fronts. I am filled with pride as I observe our students and staff exemplifying the true Timberwolf spirit!
Our 8th graders recently completed the Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA) with remarkable focus and preparation. This successful testing administration proceeded smoothly thanks to our dedicated Testing Committee and the collaborative efforts of our staff who adjusted schedules and supported our students throughout the process.
In academic competitions, our mathematics department continues to distinguish itself with exceptional performances. Twenty Tilden students recently participated in the prestigious Montgomery Blair Math Tournament, achieving remarkable results. One of our teams earned an outstanding third place overall and captured first place in the guts round! In individual competitions, our students excelled in various categories including algebra, geometry, number theory, and probability, with several placing among the top competitors. This accomplishment, alongside our current third-place standing in the MCPS Math Specialist IXL Leaderboard Challenge (ninth place overall among MCPS middle schools), demonstrates the extraordinary mathematical talent and dedication of our students. I encourage all students to log into IXL and practice their skills to help us climb even higher in the rankings!
We are especially proud to announce that one of our exceptional staff members, Rachel Ginzburg, has been nominated and selected as an honoree for the Fourth Annual Autism Staff Recognition Ceremony. This prestigious recognition celebrates her outstanding contributions to supporting students in our autism services. The ceremony will be held on April 1, 2025, at 7:00 PM.
Our commitment to providing enriching experiences extends beyond academics, with successful extracurricular activities (ECA) and events including the recent ECA and 8th-grade panoramic photo shoot on March 13. The Pi Day celebrations on March 14 further highlighted our ability to blend mathematical concepts with community enjoyment.
Looking ahead, students can explore exciting opportunities to fulfill their Student Service Learning (SSL) requirements through the Montgomery County Volunteer Center and the SSL HUB for MCPS Students and Families. Resources to consider:
- Opportunities | Montgomery County Volunteer Center.
- Student Service Learning HUB for MCPS Students and Families
Additionally, the Kid Museum offers stimulating programs for middle schoolers, including the "Invent the Future" challenge for teams of 3-6 students and their upcoming Middle School Maker Night on May 9th.
These accomplishments and opportunities reflect the vibrant, supportive community we continue to build together at Tilden Middle School.
With Timberwolf pride,
Principal Hopkins
6th-Grade Town Hall-Building a Respectful Community
We want to inform you about an important educational event for our 6th grade students. On Monday, March 17 and Tuesday, March 18, all 6th graders will participate in a Town Hall during their Science classes focused on recognizing hate speech and developing upstander skills.
What Students Will Learn
This Town Hall will address:
- Identifying hate speech and understanding its harmful impacts
- Exploring how such speech affects individuals, groups, and our Tilden community
- Developing strategies to become an effective upstander
These sessions build directly upon the "intent versus impact" concepts students have been exploring in homeroom classes over the past several weeks, providing a meaningful extension of this important learning.
Who Will Lead
These Town Halls will be facilitated by a comprehensive team including:
- School counselors
- Administrators
- Teacher leaders
- Instructional Specialist from the Department of Student Engagement
Family Partnership
We strongly encourage you to continue these important conversations at home. Ask your student about what they learned, how they felt, and what strategies they might use if they encounter concerning situations.
Resource
To support these discussions, we've provided resources for talking with your children about race and culture at the link HERE.
By working together—school and home—we strengthen our commitment to creating a safe, respectful environment where all students can thrive.
Thank you for your partnership in this important work.

Special Education
Our LAD Resource classes are starting to prepare students for the state testing that is coming up. They will be reviewing and practicing test taking strategies and getting to practice those while they are reviewing content related material. Our LFI classes are continuing to learn about shopping and preparing meals. This month will hopefully, bring warmer weather and more opportunities to get outside for community based instruction. They are also preparing for a special field trip coming up to Glenstone Art Museum. That trip isn't until May, but the classes are beginning to prepare thinking about the best ways to support our students on this awesome adventure.
ELD/WL/FACS
Spanish 1B: We will be starting the month by looking at two other holidays: El Día de San Jorge and Semana Santa in Barcelona. We will wrap up this unit with interpersonal activities around inviting others to do activities or go places.
Spanish 2AB: Students will be learning to ask and tell about illness symptoms and remedies. They will wrap up the unit with an interpersonal speaking assessment where they will have a spontaneous conversation with a partner in a doctor-patient scenario.
Spanish 3AB: We will start Unit 5, named: El desarrollo profesional (professional development)
French 1AB: We are about to start our food unit.
French 2AB: We just started our new unit in childhood and learned the imparfait (imperfect) tense.
French 1B: We are working our way towards the end of the clothing unit.
In all French classes we will begin Manie Musicale, the music competition based on the March Madness basketball tournament in March. It’s a favorite activity of all students in French, so we’re feeling excited to start!
Chinese 1AB: Students will begin to learn about different adjectives to describe cars, including size, colors, price, and the condition of the cars (old or new). They will be learning how public transportation looks in China, as well as the most commonly used transportation.
FACS: Students will begin the food safety unit and learn about how to keep food safe and proper storage techniques.
ELD 3 6th Grade: Students will continue to explore Unit 3, "In the Dark," by diving into the novel Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This story follows Esperanza, a young girl who faces many challenges after her family goes through a difficult change. We will explore themes like hope, resilience, and the power of starting over. Through this novel study, students will improve their reading skills, learn new vocabulary, and think about how Esperanza’s journey relates to their own lives.
ELD 1-2 6th Grade: Students will continue Unit 3, In the Dark, by reading “The Notice,” a story about an immigrant family in the 1930s who settled in New York City. Students will apply verbs in the past, present, and future tenses along with new vocabulary about resilience to speak and write about the text. After completing their study of this text, students will write a short biography about a famous person who overcame a challenge in their life.
ELD 1, 2, 3 Grade 7-8: Students continue with Unit 3-Chasing the Impossible. Students will be answering these questions throughout the unit: Why do people chase dreams, even if they seem impossible? What makes a dream worth pursuing? How do optimism and grit contribute to the pursuit of a dream? Students will be reading a wide variety of literature and end the unit with an argumentative essay.
Counseling
During Quarter 3 and Quarter 4, counselors will present our annual Signs of Suicide lesson through your child's Health and PE class. This is a required MCPS lesson and includes both video clips and class discussion reviewing depression signs and symptoms in youth. After the lesson, students will fill out a form to let school counselors know if they would like to talk to someone to get help for themselves or a friend. Students will also review Tilden, Montgomery County, and national resources that are available to support mental health needs. Please be on the lookout for further communication from our Counseling Department soon.
Questions? Please reach out to your child's counselor. We are here to help!
