Notes from the Principal
It's been an amazing Fall semester to date. From ACADEMICS, to ATHELTICS, to the ARTs, we remain one of the top schools (if not the top school) in SE Indiana. Already since August...3 Lilly Finalists (one Lilly Winner), 1 National Merit Finalist, FCCLA National VP, State and National qualifiers in FCCLA and FFA, State qualifiers in golf and cross country, State Champions in football (for the second year in a row), and we're just getting started!
In athletics, winter sports are off and running with the exception of boys basketball under new coach Tyler Theising. We had to move their start date back due to football's deep run in the tournament. The season will open 12/8. Wrestling and Swimming are into their respective seasons as is girls basketball. We anticipate great things this winter as we saw first hand this fall. Our EC fellas on the gridiron just finished their historic season with an exclamation point at Lucas Oil Stadium remaining #1 ranked the entire season, going undefeated...15-0, and winning back-to-back State Championships for the first time in school history. Coach Steven Medlock was recognized as an outstanding educator on Saturday and Dylan Maxwell earned the distinction of becoming our 8th Mental Attitude award winner in school history! Mental Attitude winners must excel in athletics, academics, leadership and character and are selected among senior athletes in their respective sports at all State Finals events. An amazing honor for Dylan!
Finally, in the Arts, A Christmas Story December 1-3 was another smash hit. Our Drama Department and students always put on first class performances!
We continue to celebrate East Central High School turning 50 in August and all class of 1974 graduates!

ENGINEERING and TECHNOLOGY
Throughout the past month in my engineering classes, the students have been carrying out a number of different types of projects/assignments. With our football team winning the state championship, we are going to begin designing EC State Championship Ornaments to laser engrave in most of my classes. It's not every year that a team wins state, so I want to give my students the opportunity to design and then have something to remember this season by.
Recently, the Introduction to Engineering and Design classes have been working both US and Metric Measurements as well as learning how to carry out Unit Conversions.
The Civil Engineering class has spent the majority of the last few weeks focusing on creating floor plans to scale and using the correct symbols. They have also begun planning for their Habitat for Humanity House, where they will be designing and modeling a house that meets all of the requirements of a Habitat for Humanity house, as well as meeting all building codes. Every year I am impressed with what the students are able to come up with and so far this group is off to a great start.
The Computer-aided-Design class has been working with Autodesk Inventor 2024 software. Over the past couple of weeks they have been working on an Automoblox Project. The goal of this project is to recreate an Automoblox vehicle of their choice on Inventor with a partner. The challenge is that none of the dimensions of the car are given, so the students have to use dial calipers to measure the parts and then try to model them on Inventor. It is definitely not an easy project but they are off to a good start, I can’t wait to see what they look like when they finish up.
Throughout the last month, the Aerospace Engineering class has been working on a number of simulations. They carried out a Frame Analysis, and then had to create a frame for an engine mount and perform a stress analysis on it. They also completed a number of Turbine Engine simulations on Turbojet, turbofan, and turboprop engines. Then they chose a specific aircraft, researched what type of engine it has and completed both an in depth simulation and a design report documenting the research and also recommending what type of engine to use that is both powerful enough and fuel efficient. --Anthony Moorman

Adv. Nutrition and Wellness 1
Students in Adv. Nutrition and Wellness 1 are learning about the essential nutrients and ways that we can increase nutrient density in our diet. In order to put what we are learning into practice we made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and overnight oats. We explored what nutrients are found in pumpkin and how they impact our health and hypothesized what nutrients we could pack into overnight oats by adding flavorful ingredients like fruits, nuts, and even spices.
Intro to Culinary Arts
In our Intro to Culinary classes students explored different reasons to change a recipe and practiced changing yield. We also reviewed key culinary terms and measuring skills. Students are practicing a variety of mixing methods, measuring skills, knife skills, and much more as we prepare foods such as pumpkin spice bars, pie with fresh whipped cream, and mini cheesecakes.
ProStart 2
The ProStart 2 Advanced Culinary students have been learning about stocks, sauces, & soups this semester. In October & November they learned all about the 5 mother sauces & created all of the sauces, as well as some of their derivatives. These students also made pies & donated them to the St. Leon Oktoberfest Pie Auction event to help raise funds for the local legion. Their pies brought in over $500 for the local St. Leon Legion! Students spent much of November making Pumpkin Rolls for our sales to raise money to go to the Culinary Competition in March. Students made over 200 pumpkin rolls for their sales! Next we will move onto learning all about soups!
ProStart 1
The ProStart 1 Culinary Arts & Hospitality students started October by finishing up learning all about the Hospitality & Foodservice Industry. They studied the various segments of the Hospitality Industry as well as the history of foodservice, inventions, entrepreneurs, and chefs that have shaped the industry over time. The students completed 2 labs where they made recipes from various time periods in our history. They also practiced their measuring & weighing skills in a lab and each made their own small batch cookie recipe. At the end of October students made Caramel Apples & learned all about the art of making caramel! Next we will move onto food safety & complete Servsafe® training. As a part of this course students are required to complete the ServSafe® Training and Certification Program from the National Restaurant Association. This training provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities they will need to thrive in the foodservice industry. The ServSafe® Training and Certification Program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to serve food safely. Food handlers in many states, including Indiana, are required by law to have a ServSafe® Certification.
FCCLA Skill Demonstration Events:
Kayla Craig competed in the Culinary Food Art competition and Keegan Partin competed in the Culinary Knife Skills competition in Birmingham, AL at the FCCLA National Fall Conference. We are very proud of them for competing in these events! Great Job!
Catering
The Advanced Culinary Arts ProStart 1 & 2 students do various catering events throughout the school year. They recently made dinner for the EC Football team dinners & the EC Boys soccer team banquet. Upcoming catering events include the EC Staff Breakfast in December and the EC Swim Team’s sectional dinners in January & February! This is such a great opportunity for our students to use their skills to practice real world industry skills!
Follow us on Twitter @EC_Culinary to keep up with all of our culinary adventures!
Fashion and Textiles 1
Students are learning about the impact of color on fashion. We reviewed the basics of color theory and practiced blending colors to make a color wheel using paint. We then explored the way that shades and tints of a color can change and the way that can alter the look and emotion of a color. Students even began to experiment with the basic types of color schemes.
Advanced Fashion and Textiles
The Advanced Fashion and Textiles Classes are currently studying about CoCo Chanel Fashion. They are sewing and fitting a version of the classic “little black dress” out of black crepe knit fabric. As students complete their dress, we will create a visual documentary of the process.
Advanced Child Development
During this quarter, students have had the opportunity to care for a Real Care infant simulator for 14-36 hours. Students had to determine the care the infant simulator needed based upon a real live infant’s schedule under 3 weeks old. The “infant” may need to be rocked, fed, burped or diaper changed. Many students have commented on how needy an infant can be and how much they can wake you up in the middle of the night. In addition, students are making their quilts and will be completed in the next week.
Education Professions
Cadet teachers are currently learning about teaching strategies. They are exploring the various types and what style they will lean toward when they have their own classroom. They also want to create an environment in which students enjoy learning and find it engaging. We currently have 24 cadet teachers in this Ivy Tech Dual College Credit Program.
FCCLA
FCCLA
Members of the East Central FCCLA had another busy month! 20 FCCLA Members traveled to the National Fall Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. Members competed in Demostration Skill Events, Knowledge Tests and the FACS Knowledge Bowl. Our members did an outstanding job! Alexandra Seubert placed 1st in Interior Design Sketch, Level 3. Fine Arts
Melissa Gulasy - mgulasy@sunmandearborn.k12.in.us
During the second quarter, Ms. Mueller’s students in Intro to 2D Art have been working on
Posterized Pop-Art Portraits. They briefly discussed Artists such as Andy Warhol and Banksy
while learning about facial features, proportions, color schemes, and palettes. Everyone used
Photopea to edit their chosen image for printing before enlarging their posterizations by hand. A
very specific grid with very finite measurements was required for accuracy. Below are a few
student examples from 8th to 12th grade.
Shunichiro Kurumado
What is digital art? The answers could be varied from person to person probably because there
are so many styles of artforms you can create digitally. For the last few months, our Digital
Design Photoshop students have created varied styles of artwork from postcards to Pop Art to
“oil” paintings. There are so many students who have been making great pieces of art, and I think it is a good time to share some of them now. These images are just a few examples of many
great pieces of students’ artwork.
Foreign Language
mslyon@sunmandearnborn.k12.in.us
In Mrs. Martin’s Spanish I and Spanish II classes students have been learning about The Virgin of Guadalupe. Students not only learn the language but also about the various Hispanic Countries’ cultures. The objective is to have students become more open minded and tolerant of other people and cultures.
They learned that the Virgin of Guadalupe is the Patron Saint of Mexico and that she is extremely important to Mexico’s History. Students read about her and watched brief videos. They learned that she spoke to Juan Diego and told him to go to the Bishop and ask him to build a church. The soldiers and bishop did not believe Juan Diego at first. A miracle occurred with roses roses blooming among the cacti. The cactus symbolizes the miracle of where to build the church (Basilica). Juan Diego put the roses in cloth and gave them to the Bishop’s soldiers. The roses disappeared and the apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared on the cloth. This sacred cloth is housed in the Basilica and is known to produce miracles.
Math
This month the math department would like to highlight the hard work all students and teachers are doing in the Algebra 2 classes. Algebra 2 is a very important class for success on the SAT, for moving forward to Precalculus, and for receiving the Core 40 diploma. We have Algebra 2 for all levels of math students and all teachers are differentiating their instruction to reach them.
Currently Algebra 2 is wrapping up a unit on quadratics. Students spend time graphing quadratics in vertex form and in standard form as well as learn to use the graphing calculator and all of its functions. Solving quadratics is an important concept for the students to master. They can solve quadratics by factoring, using the quadratic formula and completing the square. They learn about imaginary solutions while solving and discussing what that means graphically and algebraically. Students complete application problems and determine if a quadratic function is the best representation for the data or graph. Students interpret the problems using aspects of the graph such as maximum or minimum, and the zeros. Moving forward to the next unit, many things learned in the quadratics unit will be used again to help solve polynomial functions. We hope the students show their progress, improving scores and showing growth on the NWEA this month.
