Reading News
For the Love of Reading
Recently I was thinking about some of my favorite books that I've ever read. Some of the stories on my all-time favorites list are books from when I was a kid and it makes me think about what a formative time it is before we grow up and leave elementary school.
So what do I remember reading as a kid in elementary school?
The Trumpet and the Swan was a story that I remember being fascinated by. The story was one of those that seemed like a fantasy, because it could never happen in the real world, or could it? Maybe there could be a swan that could do the things in that book. I also really enjoyed Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. It starts off like an ordinary story, although told from the perspective of the mice, but then you get the almost unbelievable story from the rats and it makes you eager to keep reading to find out more. I guess for me I seemed to gravitate towards stories that are on the edge of possible, that might have a little mystery and adventure mixed in. A good friend turned me on the the comic-strip style (we would call it a graphic novel today) Adventures of Tintin series and I loved the visuals that were exciting and goofy along with stories that had action and mystery.
I could go on and on about some of my favorites, but let me get to the point: kids should have the skills and the freedom to explore stories that fit their interests. At school, we are working hard to provide kids with the skills to read anything they wish. However, many of us are finding that with all the time spent teaching those skills, we don't have as much time to allow kids to explore and find those stories that really grab their interest. I am hoping you can help with this.
This summer, please help your student to explore a variety of stories. Allow them the freedom to choose things that will interest them and have a long-lasting effect on their futures. If they choose something that seems too hard, then help them by supplying a word or reading to them. Perhaps share with them some of your all-time favorite stories from when you were younger, and explain why those stories have stuck with you after so many years. Many of the elements that I found of interest when I was young have continued in my choices of reading material as an adult. You can learn a lot about your student by seeing what they enjoy and what they find interesting. Share your experiences with your student and give them time to find their own passions for the love of reading.

Nutrition News
Teaching children that water is the best beverage for them can facilitate building a healthy, lifelong habit of drinking water. Water does so many great things for us including: energizes our muscles, maintains normal bowel function, helps our kidneys function, and controls calorie intake. Even just mild dehydration can lead to headaches, irritability, and difficulty learning. By improving children’s hydration, they may feel better throughout the day and therefore improve their performance in school. Best of all, water is FREE and easily accessible! Not sure how much water your child should consume in a day? Consult with your pediatrician as amounts differ by age, size, gender, and activity levels. Check out the graphic for fun ways to help increase you and your family’s water consumption. ~MSD Wellness

Reminders from the Health Office:
If your child is out sick and sees a doctor or will be out for an extended period of time due to a medical reason or out five or more days due to illness, please provide the school with a note from the doctor. If your child will have any restrictions before a procedure or after returning from a procedure, please make sure the health office is aware.
- The Abe Lincoln PTO is excited to host the End of Year Carnival on Wednesday, May 15 from 5:30-7:00. If you'd like to volunteer to help supervise games or serve the food or treats provided, please email abelincolnpto@gmail.com or send Abe PTO a ClassDojo message.
Our next committee meeting is on Monday, May 6th at 6:30PM in the library (following the monthly PTO meeting). All are welcome to join us in planning this family favorite event.
- Through the week of April 15th, the PTO hosted the Scholastic Book Fair. It was a HUGE success and we were able to help purchase inventory for the Book Vending Machine in the library as well as many other books for our teachers and school! Thank you to everyone that shopped!
- On April 18th, the PTO sponsored the Free Pizza Dinner during Open House. Thanks to all of the volunteers that help serve and the families that support our fundraisers throughout the year that allow us to offer meals free of charge at school events.
- It's Field Trip Season! Did you know that Abe PTO sponsors field trips for our students? We can't wait to hear about all of the great things they've learned and the memories they've made.
