Napier Intermediate
10th May 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia Ora! I'm thrilled to welcome everyone back to Napier Intermediate for another exciting term. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break, filled with plenty of rest and rejuvenation.
A huge thank you goes out to all the parents who participated in our 3-way conferences with teachers. Your active involvement in these discussions is a vital part of creating a strong foundation for communication and ensuring our students' success. Special thanks also go to our dedicated teachers who put in a tremendous amount of effort to make these conferences informative and productive.
This term, we're celebrating some fantastic progress in our school-wide approach to behaviour management. We've implemented some key changes, and the positive impact is already evident. Compared to this time last year, we've seen a significant decrease in stand-downs (from 18 to 4) and a remarkable 50% drop in overall behaviour incidents. This is a true testament to the positive attitude and commitment displayed by both our teachers and students.
Looking ahead, we'll be holding a Teacher Only Day on May 31st. This dedicated day will allow our staff to participate in professional development focused on cultivating even more positive classroom environments. We believe this investment in our educators will further enhance the learning experience for all our students.
I'm incredibly proud of the positive and supportive atmosphere we're nurturing at Napier Intermediate. Here's to another successful term filled with learning, growth, and collaboration!
Ngā mihi nui,
Tim Van Zyl
WHAT'S HAPPENING AT SCHOOL
BASKETBALL
Basketball started in Term 2 with Napier Rockets facing Tautoko Club. We had a great start with the way we looked in our new uniforms and then winning the game 67-14points. Together as a team we decided we would give player of the day to the whole team for everyones perseverance and hard work in playing together. Miharo koutou!
ART WORK
Puriri art students have been experimenting with mixing harmonious colour and blending using oil pastels. Here are some beautiful sunset pieces of artwork from Bree, Evie, Jax, Kelvin and Claire.
PINK SHIRT DAY
Napier Intermediate is joining in with Pink Shirt Day (Friday 17 May 2024), and encouraging our staff and students to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! By supporting this, we are strengthening our work we have been doing with the KiVa anti bullying programme. To celebrate this important kaupapa we’ll be having a school mufti day where students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt and by having some events run by our student leaders. We’ll also be fundraising to support Pink Shirt Day by having everyone that comes to school in mufti bring a gold coin donation.
ANZAC DAY
Napier Intermediate School Leaders attend the morning’s ANZAC Dawn Service.

CHILDREN'S ASTHMA RESEARCH
Do you know someone 5-11 years old, with asthma, who may be open to participating in a world-leading study?
The Medical Research Institute of New Zealand (MRINZ) are currently running a groundbreaking asthma trial for tamariki. The START CARE Asthma Study compares two different inhalers to find out which one is better at preventing asthma attacks in children. This potentially world-changing research, by Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading independent medical research institute, aims to help kids everywhere, particularly tamariki here in Aotearoa, which has some of the worst asthma rates in the world.
Watch the little video below to find out more, or head straight to the START CARE STUDY summary to get all the details.
