"Flash Alerts" provide option for early notice for school delays & cancellations
Staff, parents and community members have another notification option for school delays and cancellations. Anyone can sign up to receive text messages and/or emails from "Flash Alert." When we have a delay or closure, we issue the Flash alert FIRST because this is the tool we use to get the information to local media (which is how they gather information for the "ticker" that runs across the bottom of the screen during morning news shows).
While our goal is to get the email/robo call out to staff and families as quickly as possible, it takes time for the system to get through thousands of calls. The Flash Alert notices are immediate.
We also post information on school closures and delays on the District Facebook page right away. If you aren't following the District page, you can view the Facebook "Feed" on our website (right side above "Quick Links' on the the District Home page).
Reminder: If you are not getting the District robo calls or would like to update your phone number for those calls, you must submit the request to HR in writing.

Board Briefs: March 7, 2019
Compiled by Ioanna Cossack, Board Secretary
Our Student Representative to the Board, Isabella Meyer, was recognized by Principal Zuber and her Choir Director Wendy McPhetres for her project that was accepted by the Seattle Theatre Group (pictured). Isabella wrote a song entitled “Stand with Me,” and because this was accepted, the entire class was able to attend a performance of Dear Evan Hansen at the Paramount Theatre in January. The Board was able to watch her perform this song on the STG website. Ms. Meyer also had a lead role in the musical School of Rock performed this past week-end at BHS. She reported that this was the first Broadway production that the school has done in many years.
Mountain View Middle School and Kitsap Strong are partnering to provide a great learning opportunity for parents. On March 26th, parents and families are invited to attend Hidden in Plain Sight, a simulation and presentation to learn about current trends, how to recognize common warning signs and how to talk to youth about these important issues.
Dr. Leavell reminded the Board of some other important partnerships. Bremerton Rotary held their Wild Game Dinner and Auction and raised over $18,000. The Rotary will add approximately $14,000 more, bringing the total to $32,000 to be used for scholarships for our students. Other upcoming events that raise money for our students as well is the Semancik Foundation’s annual crab feed (already sold out) and the PTA Founders Day Dinner & Auction also coming up this month.
Three of our teachers were recently honored by the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kitsap. Honorees, who were selected based on exemplary teaching, student success in the classroom and leadership in education, included Tony Sharpe and Karen Horan from West Sound Tech and Desiree Hall from West Hills STEM. Congratulations!
Education Support Professionals Week: The Board passed a Resolution proclaiming the week of March 11-15, 2019 as ESP Recognition Week in the Bremerton School District. Our Associations usually work with the District office to provide a list of employees that will be honored –employees will be invited and certificates will be given out at our March 21st Board meeting. A Resolution was also passed proclaiming March 18-24 as School Retirees’ Appreciation Week. We’re very thankful for our retirees who maintain ties either through substituting or volunteering.
Student Travel Requests not only included students attending the State Solo and Ensemble Contest as well as the FCCLA Leadership Conference, but also Ms. Elise Erickson received approval from the Board to begin planning another trip to France during spring break 2020. They hope to have 15-20 students join the tour.
In order to receive state funding for all or a part of the school days missed due to snow, the Board approved a waiver request to be submitted to the Office of Superintendent of Public Schools.
Upcoming Changes in POLICIES:
This annual review and revision of Policy 2410, High School Graduation Requirements, went to the Board for first reading. Second reading and adoption will occur at the March 21st Board meeting.
Written Reports included revised Procedures 2190P, Highly Capable, 3122P, Excused and Unexcused Absences, as well as information on the West Sound STEM Network. Changes to 3122P are pending further review.
