Message from the Superintendent
LOSD Leadership has shifted from crisis control to planning.
While we anticipate guidance from the Governor and Oregon Department of Education, we are planning for scenarios where everyone is at home to hybrid models that can scale for any number of people in school and at home.
In particular, we intend to create a more robust online experience for LOSD teachers, staff and students, should we need to shift to that model for any duration of time. We are evaluating technology platforms designed specifically for online learning, and researching best practices. Your survey feedback is helping inform our planning.
To support the new experience, we are planning to provide additional training for teachers and staff, as well as for parents who are essential partners in home-based learning.
We also are planning for routines that support physical distancing, hygiene and wellness mandates for people in school.
Regardless of being at home or in school, we anticipate applying the traditional letter grading system after this semester/trimester.
Plans will evolve with new information through the summer. With many uncertainties, one thing is sure - we will have your children at the center of our thinking and planning.
LOSD Wellness Team is Here to Help
The routine of staying at home is tiresome and the effects of social isolation and financial uncertainty are real. LOSD school counselors and social workers are available to help students and families. Please reach out -- click here for emails.
If your concern is urgent, please call the 24-7 Clackamas County Crisis and Support at 503-655-8585.
Also, in Distance Learning Resources is a comprehensive list of resources on social, emotional and mental health supports.
Hallian Library Assist. OSEA Employee of the Year
Oregon School Employees Association (OSEA) has recognized Nicolle Landau as the 2020 OSEA Employee of the Year for going above and beyond for her students, school and OSEA chapter. Nicolle has been a leader, community builder and source of support for her fellow members in OSEA for the past 25 years. Please click here to read all of why she has been bestowed this honor.
Nicolle is the library assistant at Hallinan Elementary. Please join us in congratulating Nicolle on her well-deserved honor.
Graduation Plans Confirmed
We have confirmed plans to honor our graduates in the class of 2020. Commencement plans were made with special consideration for our graduates' wishes. We heard a keen desire to receive diplomas on the official graduation day to mark the beginning of the next stage in life, and also a strong hope to experience traditions when we can be together.
The official graduation days for Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High Schools are Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29, respectively. Each school has the following plans:
- Diploma processions will drive through the high school campuses; students will be allowed to leave their cars one at a time to walk across a stage as their names are announced and they are handed a diploma.
- Award ceremony videos for each high school will be shared with graduates and their families to watch on the same day as the diploma parade.
- Proclamation from the City of Lake Oswego designating the last week in May in honor of LOSD graduates.
- An extended commemorative issue in Lake Oswego Review for each graduating class.
- Lawn signs at each graduate's home.
- Friday night lights turned on the athletic fields for 20 minutes at 8:20 p.m.
Later in the summer, each school will host in-person graduation ceremonies in the outdoor stadiums on July 16 (LOH) and July 17 (LHS). The graduation ceremony -- or ceremonies depending on the number of people allowed to gather at that time of year -- will include the traditional procession of graduates, speeches by administration and senior speakers, musical performances by senior artists, and the cap toss.
National Primetime Graduation Special Broadcast Saturday
Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020 is a one-hour, commercial-free primetime graduation special to be broadcast Saturday.
During the broadcast, viewers will be directed to XQ’s new Rethink Together online forum, which will feature specific content for each state, including a congratulatory message and stories highlighting the adaptability and strength of students, teachers and schools amid the pandemic.
The national telecast will air on Saturday, May 16, at 8:00 p.m. on more than 30 broadcast and cable networks and streaming services, as well as various social media platforms.
Budgeting for Pandemic Financial Impacts
We are in the process of building LOSD’s budget for the 2020-2021 school year, and have begun work with the Legal Budget Committee and School Board. While we will not know the full financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the state’s revenue and education budget allocations prior to the legally required deadline of June 30, 2020, we believe that we can expect some very difficult financial times ahead. This will affect all school districts across the state.

Long Range Facility Planning Committee Meeting
Tuesday, May 19
4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Dial in: 1-646-749-3122; Access Code: 493-536-549
Members and administrators will be participating in the meeting remotely. We will not be holding a public gathering. Observe the meeting discussion remotely by calling the conference number.
Facilities Planning Survey
LOSD bond work continues during distance learning, and the Long Range Facilities Planning Committee is looking towards our future. Please harken back to when we could be inside our schools, and complete the school facility adequacy survey. Thanks for your input.
Please Verify Your Student's Information
LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2020-21 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. If you tried earlier, the ParentVUE link is working now. This benefits both families and schools by:
- Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
- Allowing parents to review the health conditions on file at your student's school.
- Enabling distribution of electronic devices covered by the district's Technology Agreement

Thank you for your continued cooperation for the safety and well being of all in our community.
Be Sure to Wear Face Coverings at School Pickups
With new guidance from the CDC, everyone involved in meal and device pickups, and other scheduled school visits, must wear face coverings.
