Oregon Battle of the Books
Do you like to read? Do you like to compete with a team? OBOB might be for you!
We are looking for a few more interested students for OBOB teams! We need:
2-4 6x8 kids and 2 3x5 kids.
Please reach out if you are interested or want to know more.
What is OBOB? Teams of 2-5 kids work together to read all the books on a preselected list. Each student will need to read (or listen to) between 4-6 books (or more!). The team will study together to learn everything they can about each book. Then it's time to compete! A battle consists of 16 questions, 8 for each team. The team with the most points wins! The winning team from MLC will get to compete in regionals in March.
Teams are formed in the 3x5 group and the 6x8 group (9x12 is available if there is interest). You may form your own team or if you want help let Molly know. Each team will need an adult to coach. Once you have a team formed, come to the library to get registration forms.
If you want to know more check out the OBOB website or email Molly in the library (msoloway@pps.net). OBOB is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.
K-5 Library Class
The first week of each month in library class, I will be doing book talks to help encourage students to explore books they might not have considered otherwise. Each month the books from come from a different section of the library or genre to help students learn about the different types of books available. In October, I shared graphic novels and this week we focused on Fiction. I love seeing students get excited about the books and rush to claim them for check out. This month the Kindergarteners get the enthusiasm award!
Next week we will be reading books about kindness because Kindness day is on November 13th. Students will talk about ways that they can show kindness in our community.
Kindergarten was
SO excited to explore
chapter books this week.

The Autobiography of Malcom X
Recommendation written by Beriah
The Autobiography of Malcolm X is a must read. In addition to standing out as great literature, this book is a major contribution to history and philosophy. His early evolution mirrors that of Frederick Douglass, as he insists on the power of reading for personal and social change. He describes, “I could now for the first time pick up a book and read and now begin to understand what the book was saying. Anyone who has read a great deal can imagine the new world that opened. [...] In fact, up to then, I never had been so truly free in my life.”
From his childhood in Omaha, his move to New York, joining the Nation of Islam, and becoming a central figure in the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, his life is a window into politics in the US. His lifelong fight against white supremacy is worth listening to and learning from. He recounts a white man asking him, “Do you mind shaking hands with a white man?” To which Malcolm X responded with another question that white people still need to grapple with, “I don’t mind shaking hands with human beings. Are you one?” This is one of the central themes in this book, and a vital question in our country. What will it take for white people to stop identifying with whiteness, and begin to identify with humanity?
This book might be best for high school students.
