HCPS Elementary School Conferences
2024-25 School Year
Preparing for Elementary School Parent-Teacher Conferences
HCPS is committed to engage every parent every day in their child’s learning. You may reach out to your child’s teacher anytime during the school year. A more formal Parent-Teacher Conference is required at least once a year for all teachers to offer their students’ parents. This is a great opportunity for you to discuss how your child is progressing academically and socially.
Parent-Teacher Conference Checklist
Set the date: Your school will communicate with you when it is time for you to have a conference with your child’s teacher. The conference will occur before the end of the school year. Confirmation of the date, time, and location of the meeting will be provided by the school. Some meetings can be held virtually, if needed.
Preparation: Teachers will send home school work and reports or information about the student’s progress before the conference. Keep track of their progress and write down questions you may have as the school year progresses.
Talk with your Child: How does your child feel about school? How does your child think he/she is doing in school? Is there anything your child wants you to ask or tell the teacher? Be prepared to talk with your child’s teacher about how your child feels about their school experience.
Major Changes: Are there changes to your child’s home routine that might impact school work such as health, family issues, separation from friends. Feel free to share with your child’s teacher anything that might impact learning.
Questions for the Teacher
How is my child getting along with classmates?
Does my child participate in learning?
What are my child’s strengths?
How are my child’s reading skills progressing? Is my child behind, on grade level, or ahead of peers?
How can I support my child at home?
What support can my child receive if my child is having behavioral, health or emotional challenges?
How can my child get homework help if my child is struggling?
After the Parent-Teacher Conference
After the meeting, keep up to date on your child’s work. Sign up for Canvas and access on a computer or mobile app to view courses, teacher’s pages, assignments, and course calendars in their inbox. You may reach out to your child’s teacher anytime during the school year.
