Mr. Smith's Scoop π¦
Happy Friday!
This is a reminder that there will be no school on Monday, January 20th, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 21st. We encourage families to take time to reflect on Dr. Kingβs legacy and the importance of his contributions to civil rights and equality. Consider using this day as an opportunity to engage in community service or discussions about kindness, inclusion, and making a positive difference in the world.
Tips to Boost Oral Reading Fluency Reading fluency is an essential skill that helps children read smoothly, accurately, and with expression. Here are some simple activities you can do at home to help your child:
1. Read Aloud Together: Spend 10-15 minutes a day reading aloud with your child. Take turns reading sentences or pages, and model expressive reading.
2. Practice Sight Words: Use flashcards or games to help your child quickly recognize common sight words.
3. Re-read Favorite Books: Repetition builds confidence and fluency. Encourage your child to read a favorite story multiple times.
4. Record and Listen: Have your child record themselves reading a short passage, then listen to it together. This helps them identify areas for improvement.
5. Echo Reading: Read a sentence or paragraph first, then have your child mimic your pacing and expression.
6. Celebrate Progress: Praise your childβs efforts and improvements, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement keeps reading enjoyable.
By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can support your childβs journey to becoming a confident and fluent reader.
Have a great long weekend.

Β‘Feliz viernes!
3. Vuelva a leer sus libros favoritos: La repeticiΓ³n genera confianza y fluidez. Anime a su hijo a leer su cuento favorito varias veces.

Building Emotional Intelligence with RULER
Have you heard of RULER? Itβs a powerful framework that helps us understand, use, and manage our emotions effectively. As a school, We are excited to share how RULER is helping our students develop crucial social and emotional skills.
What is RULER?
RULER is an acronym for:
- Recognizing our emotions
- Understanding our emotions
- Labeling our emotions
- Expressing our emotions
- Regulating our emotions
By teaching students these skills, we empower them to:
- Build stronger relationships
- Improve academic performance
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Make better decisions
- Resolve conflicts peacefully
RULER is being integrated into our school culture through:
- Classroom lessons: Teachers incorporate RULER into their lessons to teach students about emotions and how to manage them.
- Social-emotional learning activities: Students participate in activities that help them practice RULER skills, such as mindfulness exercises, role-playing, and group discussions.
- Positive behavior interventions and supports: RULER is used to teach students positive behavior strategies and to address challenging behavior.
By fostering emotional intelligence, weβre creating a more positive and supportive learning
environment for all students.
